Guest guest
Namaste, learned members, One of my friends has asked the following question: " Adi Sankara lived in 8 AD as per the historic documents available(though this is disputed by many). Why he has not mentioned anything about Srimad Bagavatham in any of his texts or narrations. Is it because a. whether the Bagavatham's evolution is subsequent his avatar(which cannot be as the Bagavatham must have come into existence centuries before)? b. Or He just ignored it(this also cannot be the reason, as he has commented about each and every other sastra, purana etc)? c.Or whether we could not secure his comments on Bagavatham, which could have gone on destruction, due to various reasons(this also cannot be a valid reason,as we have secured almost all his works) " I am not competent to tell him anything about this. I would appreciate if some of the learned members of opur Group can throw some light. Many thanks and with Hari Om Mani R. S. Mani Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Mobile. Guest guest
Dear Shri Mani and friends, There is a view that Bhagavad Purana developed from the South after the advent of the 12 vaishnava alwars between 3rd and 8th century. The bhakti cult took deep roots after that.Even though the stories of Krishna and other avatars of Vishnu had been in circulation, the PURANAS as such [vishnu, kurma etc]came to be written only after 10th century as a sacred text....Most probably the original versions were produced in the south, followed later by Sanskrit versions in the north. In such a context, Adi Sankara would not know Bhagavad Purana as a scriptural text, though the Puranic /mythological stories he was aware of .His work Bhaja Govindam attests to the fact that he was fully aware of Krishna's lore...again there are scholars who state that BhajaGovindam may not be the original work of Adi sankara ,but a latter-day Sankaracharya's work.
