Pranam Akshay,

I will try to answer this, but other learned advaitins can pitch in...

Theer are more that 108 upanishads. Infact I think there are about 1000+.

Adi Shankaracharya has reviewed most of these and has written commentaries on

the selected 11 saying that these were the most important and hold the basic

essence of the rest of the upanishads.

So the 11 that we are studying are basically the ones that Adi Shankaracharya

has already summarized for us.

Hope this helps.

Hari Om.

Upanisads number

Pranam to all members!

I had one query:

As you know out of 108+ Upanisads only 11 are considered to be Major

and are studied. These-

Isha,Kena,Katha, Aitreya,Taitreya ,Prasno,Mundak, Mandukya, Chandhogya, Briha

daranyak,Swetasvata ra.

talk about unity of Brahman and Atman surely but is that the only basis

on which these 11 only been selected for study and what is there in

other Upanisads which are never quoted even? Don't they(rest of

Upanisads) talk of this same Unity?

Namaste.

Namaste all.

Dr. Radhakrishnan says that the number is perhaps 200. However he and

all writers respect the thesis in the Muktikopanishad about the

existence of 108 Upanishads and their categorisation.

Besides the ten well-known and most important, 98 Upanishads are

listed there, categorised as follows:

SAmAnya vedAnta Upanishads: 24

Yoga Upanishads : 20

SannyAsa Upanishads: 17

Vaishnava Upanishads: 14

Shaiva Upanishads: 14

ShAkta Upanishads: 9

These again are reclassifiable as 10 + 32 + 19 + 16 + 31 according

respectively to the Veda to which each one belongs; namely, RgVeda,

Krishna Yajur Veda, Shukla Yajur Veda, SAma Veda, AtharvaNa Veda.

Of these 98 again the following ten are considered with great

respect (The numbers in brackets denote the serial number of the

Upanishad in the list mentioned in Muktikopanishad):

(a) sAmAnya-vedAnta Upanishad category:

(14): ShvetAshvatara Upanishad. This belongs to Krishna Yajur Veda.

SAnkhya, Yoga and MAyA principle are explained in this.

(62): Mahopanishad. This belongs to SAma Veda. It was given by Vyasa

to his son Shuka. This is an in-depth Advaita Upanishad.

(25):MaitrAyaNIya Upanishad.Belongs to SAma Veda. Explains the

UpAsanA of the Sun as Brahman.

(60):Paingalopanishad. Yajnavalkya explains the mahAvAkyas to

Paingala.

(26): KaushItakI Upanishad. Belongs to Rig Veda. PrANa (The vital

air) is worshipped as Brahman in this.

(b) SannyAsa Upanishad category:

(13): JAbAlopanishad: Belongs to Shukla Yajur Veda. The space

between the eyebrows in the human anatomy is donoted as 'brahma-

sthAna'. This is the VArANasI of the human body. Lord Shiva initiates

the tAraka mantra to the knower of this. The attributes of a

SannyAsi are detailed by Yajnavalkya in this.

© Vaishnava Upanishad category:

(19): MahAnArAyaNopanishad: Belongs to Krishna Yajur Veda.

(28): NRsimha-pUrva tApanI Upanishad. Belongs to AtharvaNa Veda. A

complicated gem of a mantra called Narasimha mantra is explained here

and recommended for all material and spiritual uplift & realisation.

(104): KalisantaraNopanishad. This has the Hare rama hare Krishna

mantra, sworn to as the mantra supreme by followers of Chaitanya.

(d) Shaiva Upanishad category:

(12): Kaivalyopanishad. Belongs to Krishna Yajur Veda. Creator Brahma

initiates Rishi Ashvalayana in Brahma Vidya in this Upanishad. Adi

Shankara quotes this Upanishad very often.

PraNAms to all advaitins.

Dear Surendra-ji

Just to write 'OK' (for which I thank you) you have reproduced my

entire mail (of about 45 lines) in your mail. Shri Ram Chandran-ji and

other moderators have time and again issued an appeal to members not to

reproduce the old mail, because it unnecessarily clutters up members'

mail boxes. Please avoid reproducing the old mail unless you need to

refer to specific lines and passages; and even in that case let us try

to quote only those specific lines and passages. Thank you.

PraNAms to all advaitins.
