Dear Shailendra,That which goes by the general name " Mind " has four functions to perform. Those are (1) Speculating (2) Confirming (3) Asserting and (4) Storing. Accordingly mind has four names also, depending upon the function it performs. These names are purely notional. They are (1) manas (2) buddhi (3) ahankara and (4) chittam.

Chittam is a storage house where all the earlier actions and samskaras are stored. It is altogether different from Chit of Sat-Chit-Aananda. Chit is essential nature of Atman, which is of the nature of Consciousness.

So, Chittam and Chit represent entirely two different things.PS: " chiti roopena ya kritsnam " is not from Devi Sooktam. It is from Devi Maahatmyam. The full sloka is:chiti rupena ya kritsnam etad vyapya sthita jagat

namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah.Meaning: Who pervades the entire universe as the Consciouss principle, to her I salute, I salue and I salute again. With regards,Anupam.

Namaste,

I have read that chitta is the memory aspect of mind and in sat-chit-

ananda, it means the consciousness. Another usage is in Devisooktam

chiti roopena ya kristnam ...

Can somebody explain the word and its multiple usages .

thanks,

Shailendra

--- Sir,

plz clarify my doubt that the function of the Brain (mind) is

same in all living beings with different degrees or not?becoz animals

also posses certain amout of memory(chitta)by which only they coud

recognise their food. They also posses buddhi(power of discretion)

by which only they could rcgnjse their enemy and friend

All the beings (including human beings) have mind and all the four

faculties of the mind. But, in human beings the possibility for

development of Buddhi (through which one can identify the right course

of action) is more compared with animals.

With regards,

Anupam.
