Dear All,

Independence is called in Sanskrit as Svatantra, as opposed to the

paratantra. Svatantra means " dependent on oneself " (svasmin

tantriiyate iti (am I wrong?) ). Let us all (get to know that we)

depend upon (only) our own Self and that day will be our Svatantra

day.

Ye! the children of immortality, ye! those reside in the heavens,

" Happy Independence Day to all of us "

With regards,

Anupam.

Namaste dear Sri Anupam:

We need to be little more careful while interpreting svatantra. The

literary meaning of Svatantra is 'self-reliant.' Self-reliant is the

one who is more active, independent, creative, competent and

spontaneous. Svatantra in the Indian political context is

the " Freedom movement, " Now in the spiritual context, what we seek

is freedom from the Body, Mind and Intellect (BMI). When we free

ourself from BMI we recognize our True Identity - SELF or 'OM' we

become realized. Svatantra is also the name of a school of philosophy

of Mahhyamika branch of Buddhism . Here is an interesting article

comparing schools of philosophies:

For Buddhists, svatantra signifies 'nirvana' and for advaitins,

svatantra from BMI is liberation.

Let us remember and celebrate this day of Freedom!

With my warmest regards,
