I never heard of any commentary on the Gayatri Mantra by Acharya Sri Shankara.

Namaste The commentary ascribed to Shankara on the Gayatri, as stated by Ram-ji, can be found in the book 'Tune in the Mind (Japa Gayatri) by Swami Chinmayananda. It was published by Central Chinmaya Mission Trust - Mumbai.

You can find the book here: http://www.chinmayapublications.com/detail.php?id=5 & prodid=AT12 Kathirasan

Namaste:

The available evidences do not indicate that Sankara wrote a

commentary on this Mantra. A Sanskrit commentary attributed to Adi

Sankara is provided at the bottom. I have provided the link to the

website with that commentary. I am not sure on the authenticity of

that reference and I leave it to other Sanskrit scholars explore and

provide a translation. The commentary written at the website is full

of mistakes and hence excluded.

The Gayatri Mantra is considered revealing the very essence of the

Vedas. From ancient times, those who want to study the Vedas were

first initiated with the Gayatri mantra, the mother of Vedas (the

mantra points to the full import of the Vedas). So let us explore a

full understanding of Gayatri Mantra to find out the true Vedic

meaning: The accepted meaning of Gayatri Mantra is as follows:

Namaste,

Chandogya 3:12:1-9 bhashya deals with Gayatri, also

- Brihadaranyaka 5:14:1-7.

Nrisimha-puurvatapini 4:2 and 5:1

The first two have been translated (Chan. by Sw. Gambhirananda,

and Brihad. by Sw. Madhavananda). Neither is online though.

Together, these could be considered as Gayatri Bhashya.

Regards,

Sunder
