Ahimsa means more resistance to harm rather than non violence. So a measured response to violence can be violence and ahimsa at the same time. Politicians always twist things as the first tenet of a their profession is to not tell the truth. Obama is probably the 'best of the worst' at this time, but I doubt he can live up to some people's expectations, for an external solution to their own internal problems. Machiavelli in 'the Prince' said just remove the head or Prince if you want to take over a country, and leave everything else much the same, otherwise you raise expectations and hence dissatisfaction. The more things change the more they stay the same, the only thing missing from Obama's cabinet is Bill Clinton. Already before he is President he is saying that the Governor of Illinois' choice for Senator should not be recognised. This is the typical duplicitousness of the politician...ignore the Constitution/s when it suits. Whatever happened to innocent until proved guilty, and not prejudicing the chance of a fair trial...Remember these are lawyers ignoring their own constitution. Obama is the first African-American to be President and that is where his uniqueness starts and ends. I may sound pessimistic but the only thing that is going to slow down the depradations on the planet in the near future is the recession not politician---who only use rhetoric. Unfortunatley the planet is severely injured the poles are shifting almost imperceptibly, and the future written for humanity is more likely that 90% of humans will be in a great 'die off', in some cyclical catastrophe in the future. My point being is that humanity will always act in the same way as long as the dog has a bent hind leg. There is no happiness to be found in the material world, the 'Kingdom is Within'. We can only do our best to apply our own belief systems as we perceive them. For there is no right or wrong but thinking that makes it so. Morality is geographical, some can have four wives some can have one etc etc. In the end a President that sits down and talks of peace and then eats meat is just empty words. One has to go to Gandhi who well understood the world, and that a meaure of how civilised a society is---is how they treat the animals. My father sat and talked with Gandhi several times when he was serving in the Indian Army...so at least I know what I was told. In the end we can only reflect our inner selves, humanity will always be in the state it is................Happy New Year really should be happy pursuit of happiness within-----and the golden rule..Cheers Tony.
