Guest guest
Advaitin List Policies and Posting Guidelines: (always available at the following link: advaitinModerate/) Members of the advaitin list are expected follow the Guidelines which are available at: /local/guidelines.html. It is also the responsibility of each member to familiarize themselves with the advaitin list policies and the guidelines for posting. Members are responsible for the content of their messages and the acceptance of any message posted should not be considered as an endorsement by the moderators. The purpose of the Advaitin list is to facilitate discussions on Advaita as established by Shankara and carried on by succeeding traditions of teachers, with principal reference to the Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita and the Brahmasutras. Questions or observations on any aspect of this, or on closely related topics, are allowed. Posting to the group implies that the member has read, understood and accepted these guidelines. The list moderates the new members to observe closely whether they have understood and are following the list guidelines. The moderation of the new members will be for a temporary time period. Members should preferably post no more than two messages per day. Members replying to a post should not change the subject heading when sending their replies. When a new topic is begun, a new thread and subject heading should be used so that it is clear that it is a new topic. Replies to posts should clearly differentiate between the new material and the earlier. It is suggested that, for example, the words of the earlier post be enclosed thus: <<earlier message>>. Please retain the name of the poster to whom the reply is addressed, and the message number if and when possible. Posts shall not consist entirely of quoted material, even from canonical advaitin texts. Please write enough in your own words to tie the quote in with the topic you are addressing. Quotes should be directly relevant to the topic under discussion and be included as authoritative support for the post. Rather than extensively quoting material from a web site, the address of the material should be provided. It is permissible to post details of websites, papers, lectures, courses etc. providing that these have direct relevance to the group. Repeated posting of the same information is not allowed. Also, members should not join the group merely in order to advertise such material. Members who continue to post advertisement materials will lose their posting privileges. Members should preview the Advaitin List Home Page at advaitin/ for links to FAQs, etc.; Members are welcome to provide feedback and/or questions on list policies by emailing to " advaitins " . Members are required to follow the list rules and regulations specified below: 1. Members are prohibited from posting messages that are not directly related to the stated purpose of the group, unless consent has been provided by the Board of Moderators. 2. Members are prohibited from posting messages that are threatening, deliberately inflammatory, inciting, abusive, harassing, vulgar, obscene, libelous, hateful, or defamatory in nature. This covers not only the content of the message but also the tone put forth in the message. 3. Members are prohibited from posting messages that are objectionable based on comments made with regard to race, ethnicity, creed, gender, or religion. 4. Members are prohibited from posting messages that include personal attacks of other group members or other individuals. 5. Members are prohibited from posting messages that include dialog with other individuals without consent of those involved in the dialog. When dialog with others is approved for distribution to the group, this dialog should include sufficient mail header information such that the original text can be attributed to the original author. 6. Members must always provide sufficient identification of the post's author through either an e-mail signature or an e-mail address that clearly provides the first and last names of the sender. This identification shall identify the legal identity of the sender and any use of a false name will result in immediate termination of all accounts associated with the sender. Violation of any of the above rules will be determined by the Board of Moderators and may result in action such as written warnings, temporary moderation of member posts, temporary suspension and termination of group membership. • Warning 'cards' may be awarded to members who post any message which fails to adhere to the list guidelines. Such warnings will be notified publicly to the list by the moderator who issues the warning. • The first time any infraction is penalized, a 'yellow card' will be given and on the second occasion, an 'orange' card. • The reason for issue of the card will be given but there will be no appeal. This may mean that there is the occasional misunderstanding; this is why two warnings are allowed before any action is taken. Any objections, on or off the group, may result in a further card being given. • On the third breach of guidelines, a 'red card' will be issued, on majority verdict of the moderators, and the member will be prohibited from posting to the group (i.e. will be given a read-only facility). Posting facilities will not be allowed for a period of 1 year thereafter. • A card will remain in effect for 1 year after its issue, at which time it will be deleted. The deletion of a yellow card will demote any orange card outstanding to yellow, and any red card outstanding to orange. • In the case of extreme violations of guidelines moderators may, by majority vote, award an instant `red card' irrespective of whether there have been any previous yellow cards. • Any member who is discovered to have rejoined under a new name after having been awarded a red card will be banned permanently from the group, i.e. not permitted to rejoin after the 1 year ban. • The moderators may also, subject to majority decision, place any member under moderation if this is thought to be justifiable. Note: The above rules are subject to modification by the Board of Moderators when they become necessary. Members who want to share their comments and suggestions to improve the guidelines can send an email to advaitins. Advaitin List Moderation Board Members: S.N.
