Guest guest
Dear Friend: You are right that Self is without attributes and its nature is that of pure consciousness. We have it both on the authority of the Upanishads and strength of the spiritual maturity of the sages who attain Self-Knowledge through spiritual practice and grace. Prajnanam Brahma - " Consciousness is Brahman " Aham Brahmasmi - " I am Brahman " It does not matter if someone says that " consciousness is not the final reality. " These are just words. If one remains only within the domain of words, one can never become Self-Realized. Certainly, we can agree that " words are not the final reality. " The best words are those that help us transcend the words. If this is not understood, words and conceptual baggage can actually obscure Realization. The " Final Reality " does not speak and say I am this or that or not this or not that. To Know Brahman, one has to Be Brahman. Namaste and love Yours in Bhagavan Harsha advaitin [advaitin ] On Behalf Of bengt.frost Sunday, March 29, 2009 3:34 PM advaitin Even Conciousness is not the Final Reality ? - Dennis Waite Hi, I have studied Non-dualistic philosophy for approximately 10 years, but new to Advaita Vedanta :-$ To deepen my understanding of Advaita Vedanta I am reading Dennis Waite's excellent book - " Back to THE TRUTH - 5000 years of ADVAITA " . But I am a little puzzled when reading chapter 6 - Who I Really Am, section - Describing the Self. In subsection __Even Consciousness is not the Final Reality__ Dennis Waite references Nisargadetta Maharaj and (primary) Robert Powell to state that Consciousness is __not__ the final Reality. I know that Self-Atman-brahman is without attributes but it's __nature__ is pure consciousness - as stated in Upanishads. I agree with traditional(Adi Shankara) Advaita Vedanta claming this. Am I missing something here? Note. I have read previous Advaitin threads where Nisargadetta Maharaj description of Awareness is interpreted as equivalent with Consciousness. ---
Guest guest
Dear Friend, Your answer is clarifying and though " words are words " " The best words are those that help us transcend the words " and ultimately " To Know Brahman, one has to Be Brahman " . Because you are already brahman and because you have a human mind which is capable of recognizing that fact, you can know that you are brahman. One cannot become that which one already is, but one can recognize that which one has not recognized as yet. pranams, Durga
