That is hitting nail on its head. True, the primary means, not goal, seems " chitta shudhi " . Wanted to ask " how to do " , but much info is already out there about it. So what prevents us from doing what we know we should be doing, seems pertinent. << << This is a loaded question but oif one takes the scientific approach then it is easy. Acharya has gives us the most ultra modern took for that " " neti-neti " . If one asks this this the truth the answer is usually comes back to us as " " neti-neti " . One needs to continue this until one gets the answer " yes, this is the truth " . That is precisely the reason why I adore advaita Vedanta. This process is to be applied to all walks of life not just locking ourselves in the ivory towers of " advaita-vedanta " . I am convinced that all this was meant for practice and not just for discussions. When there is an accident then scientists go the their lengths to determine the cause for that event. Once they determine the cause then they can improve the designs so that history does not repeat. That is obtaining " mukti " or " moksha " . However, if we do not apply our understandings into practice then there is a constant continuum of same errors. This is precisely why they say History repeats itself. Errors done by Napoleon were repeated by Hitler that is why he lost on the Russian front. So, IMO – " Chitta-shuddhi " is nothing more than a process of what is wrong with me at this time. That is why our ancestors recommended recitation of mantra. Term " mantra " is defined as " mananaata traayate iti " . Meaning – One that helps you float or rescues from drowning. The suffix " tra " clearly suggests the protection. Other word that use this " tra " with same meaning are " paadatraaNa " , " shirastraaN " … etc. Thus in mantra, for expression " mananaata " is extremely critical. (manana, nididhyaadsana are encompassed there-in.). One needs to dwell on the issues until resolved. Some times we cannot see the problems then one does need help of a guru for this. I love the expression of Saint Kabir where he uses the analogy of soap with the guru. saabuna bicaaraa kyaa kare\, gaa.NThe raahe moya . jala so.n arasaa passa nahi\, kyo.n kara uujala hoya || kabiira || Meaning (liberal) – What can the soap do if it does not come in contact with dirt (in presence of water)? >> >> I like, admire and aspire Ahimsa (non-injury). Like to read and even write about it. But if some one even merely criticises my ideas, or worse my understanding, I violently disagree! How dare they say that?!<< << If you think you are correct then you need to defend it the answer is again " chitta-shuddhi " and implementation of it in your own life. If this is not done then our present " vyavaharika " then we totally loose the significance of any practice, specifically " chitta-shuddhi " . >> >> I also like to perform pooja (worship) to Lord. Especially, when doing bounded duty gets uncomfortable or little painful, doing pooja brings good relief while postponing duty. After all, Arjuna listened to Geetha postponing fight until 18 chapters were told. I am not bigger than Arjuna, so duty can wait while pooja is performed! << << This also be interpreted as arjuna was not sharp enough to " get it " instantly and he had to wait for 18 Chapters to finish !!? Just think if arjunaa never realized the take home message of his importance to the present of performing his duty towards fighting war then all 18 chapters would be in total vain. The idea is to understand and then implement it to the present. This is precisely why acharys says, bhagavadgètá kiòcid-adhitá ||gañgáialalavakaïiká pètá, What ever we have learnt or understood that needs to be practiced, otherwise everything becomes an academic exercise. IMO - Duty can never wait. I feel that the most important decision of your life is the one that you are about make. Lot of folks will differ with me but do you really think that Lord KriShNaa said all that " word-by-word " ? It was all composition of sage Vyas. giitaa is nothing more than as upaniShada that gives various illustrations to dive in the take home message. It is up to us to understand it and implement the message in our lives. Brahman is beyond thought - avaang maanasa gOcaraM. Thinking is hard, and introspection not always pleasant. Mind seems to enjoy thinking about transcending thoughts- and Brahman, instead of introspection! You are part of that " BRAHMAN " and you need to find it yourself. No one else can find it or point it to you. You are subject, the object and tool that is required to discover that object. If the tool is rusted then one needs to clean it. >> >> I might have dramatized or exaggerated, but " chitta " does throw such and tries self-sabotage is all I wanted to share. ========================== Hari OM! -Srinivas Kind Regards, Dr. Yadu
