Dear Members of the group,

Namaste and wish you all a great and happy new year 2010.

Is there any difference between the two terms yaaga and yajna

technically? Grammatically, they are derived from the same dhatu but

the the pratyayas are different. For Yaaga, it is yaj + ghain. I am

not sure of the pratyaya for yajna.

Please let me know.

Thanks and regards,

Anupam.

Dear Anupam-ji,

Yaga abd yajna are the same.

The definition of yaga is--devatoddeshena dravyatyagaH yagaH. Setting apart some

material to be offered to a deity is yaga.

Tasya agnau prakShepaH homaH. The offering of that material into the fire is

homa.

So the mantra says- sUryAya svAhA, sUryAya idam na mama- this is for sUrya (sun

deity) and is no longer mine.

Best wishes,

S.N.Sastri
