Guest guest
Dear members, Namaste. I request the learned members to tell something about anyonya adhyasa. Or, please give me the pointer wherefrom I can get to know about it. With regards, Anupam.
Guest guest
Dear Anupam-ji, Pure consciousness (or brahman) is the only Reality. There is mutual superimposition of brahman and the BMI on each other. The ego, mind, body, etc., (BMI) are superimposed as such on brahman. This is known as svarUpa adhyAsa. Like the snake superimposed on a rope, the BMI is not real and is found to have no existence apart from brahman when the Self (brahman) is realized. But brahman is not superimposed as such on the ego, etc. Only its sentience and existence are superimposed. This is known as samsarga adhyAsa (superimposition of association). This is similar to the superimposition of the red colour of a flower on a crystal in its proximity. Even after it is known that the red colour belongs to the flower and not to the crystal, the crystal continues to appear red. Similarly, even after one has realized that sentiency belongs to brahman and not to the BMI, the BMI continues to have sentiency. But the difference is that the enlightened person knows that the sentiency does not belong to the BMI and is only borrowed from brahman which is pure consciousness, while the unenlightened thinks that it belongs to the BMI. In superimposition the consciousness, which is real, appears to be associated with the BMI which is not absolutely real, but has only empirical reality. Superimposition is the erroneous cognition of two different things as one. In the rope-snake illusion the person says " This is a snake " . Here `this' stands for the object in front, which is a rope, but is not recognized to be such. This object in front and the illusory snake which appears are cognized as one. This is a combination of the `this' which has vyAvahArika reality and the snake which has only prAtibhAsika reality. Similarly, in the mutual superimposition of brahman and the BMI there is a combined cognition of brahman which is absolutely real and the BMI which has only vyAvahArika reality. This is why shri Shankara says that there is a combination of the real and the unreal (satyAnRite mithunIkRitya). This definition applies to all adhyAsas. Guest guest
Anupamaji - PraNAms There is an extensive discussion by Shankara using Mirror and face reflection, the anonyonya sambandha of adhaara and adheya in the Upadesha saahasri, 18th chapter on tat tvam asi. Some of my discussion on the topic comes from that only. I have discussed in the Knowledge series the two types of adhyaasa also and Shree sastriji has also provided an explanation about it. Hope this helps Hari Om! Sadananda --- On Wed, 1/6/10, anupam srivatsav <anupam.srivatsav wrote: I request the learned members to tell something about anyonya adhyasa.
