Because the mind is shorthand for our awareness of something and that awareness of something carries with it an awareness of a locus from which that something issues. Recognising something as a smell is a mental phenomenon, calling it such is something only a human could do. There are very likely sniffer machines that capture all the material aspects that give rise to a smell but they cannot be said to have a sense of smell like a human. The mind judging where the smell is coming from goes out to it. Best Wishes, Michael.
