Guest guest
Isha Upanishad(IU) comes under the Vaajasaneyi Samhita portion of the White-Yajur Veda. It is the mantropanishad (means, the ideas are in the capsule-form). Its explanation is to be found in Brhadaranyaka Upanishad(BU). Therefore, BU is called the Brahmana Upanishad (explanation) for IU. Vaajasaneyi Samhita details the Vedic Karma (ritual) Darshapaurnamaasa. Since the IU falls at the end of this, there is a claim that IU is also advocating Karma. Also, those instructions of the Vedas which instigate one to karma must have the " third conjugation " affixed to it. For example, suppose the sentence " tapasaa kalmasham hanti " , which means, " By austerities, impurities (of the mind) are removed. " Here, tapasaa (By Austerities) is in 3rd conjugation. Austerities is the instrument, through which impurities are removed. So, 3rd conjugation refers to the instrument. The IU starts with the words " Ishaa " , ie, By Ishwara or By God or By Atman etc. Therefore, 3rd conjugation is used. Now, should we consider the fact of IU being at the end of Karmakaanda and 3rd conjugation for the word Ishwara = Atma, making Atma as the instrument and conclude that IU talk only about Karma and not about Jnana? Has this IU to be utilized in the Darshapurnamaasa yajna? No, says Shankaracharyaji. He says, since Atman is nishkriya - actionless, etc, it is not to be connected with karma. That is what he says when he said: karmasu aviniyuktaaH. Viniyojaka vidhi is a vedic instruction by which the relationship between the major karma and the subordinate karma is mentioned. Now, by saying " aviniyuktaah " , Shankaracharyaji negated the relationship. The reason for such negation is to be found in the very same IU, which is going to explain " Atman is everywhere, pure, One, wihtout a second, Eternal, etc. " We shall see more about IU later in my subsequent posts. With regards, Tanya.
