Tony touched on the important point in the Mahatma's teaching that non-violence does not mean passive behavior, but is an active force. This is key to understanding ahimsa in national as well as individual behavior. Michael, you may enjoy some of Gandhiji's writings about his relation to the political sphere. He understood all his action to spring from spiritual goals and did not think of himself as a politician. The Essential Writings of Mahatma Gandhi, by Rhagavan Iyer, is a good compilation. I also liked Tony's quote of Satish, suggesting we think in terms of 'soil, soul, and society'. I kept thinking of this trinity while was out running in the woods this morning. Michael, perhaps you will tell us what you found offensive or political in Tony's post. For me it was a reminder that when we are guided by spiritual principles many of our political struggles fall away. Jill
