The difference is only in the potentiality of the mind and particularly the vijnanamayakosa. An animal can become realised without becoming human, for God is Love and Love is God. In fact according to some ancient writings the human is the teacher and the animal is the disciple. For much is going on at a subconscious level in the 'sounds of silence'. Many pets reincarnate in different lives with the human, attracted by the vibrations they have absorbed into their subtle bodies. They even can adopt human forms on the astral for limited amounts of time. In the delusion and work of Maya everything is possible. For all is truly one.
