" But this is not (as I understand it) how the prakriyA argues. Rather, the idea is that we do not perceive the dream or deep sleep with our waking senses so how can we claim that these states occur in waking? By analogy, we seem to see a separate world in the dream but do not claim (in the dream) that the waking state is part of that world (but might equally well do so). Just as we do not think that a particular dream world continues to exist once the related dream has ended, why should we believe that the waking world continues once we are asleep? From Sankarraamn Dear Dennis, There is validity in your qestion how are we sure that the waking state remains intact in deep-sleep, thereby questioning the validity of the judgement of the waking state of dream and sleep. But, should not one come to that understanding in the waking state itself, that is the waking state is realized not to exist even in that state in that perception. That knowledge can transpire only in the Witness. But there is the difficulty that the Witness is free from any knowledge and ignorance, and this understanding cannot happen to even the Witness, as the Witness is not incompatible with ignorance. Only the akhandakhara-vritti stopping all objectified phenomenal knowledge, through the question, " Who am I, " which is not an intellectual question waiting for an answer, further which may not be a state at all, this understanding can happen. It is in this light I can acquiesce in the pronouncement of Nairji that one should not be stuck up with the avasthathriya, but should look at the foundational thought, which is not anyone state, but is a neutral platform from which one can take a plunge to the self. But one will not reamin there as an entity, as if one still continued to exist, it would be still another state. with warm regards Sankarraman
