I have no problems with him writing books and >educating the masses it is just the claims that's all. For him to say >the ego only started 6,000 years ago shows outstanding ignorance of >history, and the teachings of sages like Ramana etc.plus the >Upanishads.........If you give these gurus enough rope they >eventually hang themselves.........Tony. This notion appears to have originated in the Sept Common Ground, at http://commonground.ca/iss/0709194/cg194_tolle.shtml The relevant paragraph is: " There's some evidence that the ego started about 6,000 years ago, but nobody can say for sure. Before that, humans were in a state of innocence. When we go beyond the dysfunction of the ego, we regain our original innocence, but on a much deeper level. This is why Jesus said unless we become as little children we cannot enter the kingdom of heaven. " It's a bit silly but he does leave wiggle room for it not being a fact to which he is going to cling. The basic idea of " regaining our original innocence " is not unsound, except to nitpickers like Toombaru. It's okay not to like Tolle. Just like Byron Katie, he speaks to many people, and has an approach for the masses that may be labeled simplistic. But doesn't mean this work a) isn't valuable and b) is the only thing going on with them. It's easy, in fact, to believe that they are doing far more subtle things with their insiders than they are with their public pronouncements. But you don't have to believe, no problem.
