Ramayana and detachment

The following is a verse from Valmiki Ramayana which stresses the

need

for developing detachment towards relations and possessions:--

 

yathA kAshTham ca kAshTham ca sameyAtAm mahArNave

 

sametya tu vyapeyAtAm kAlam AsAdya kancana |

 

evam bhAryASca putrASca jnAtayaSca vasUni ca

 

sametya vyavadhAvanti dhruvo hyeshAm vinAbhavaH ||

 

Ayodhyakanda, ch. 105, sl. 27

 

 

 

Just as two logs of wood come together by chance in an ocean, float

together

for some time, and then separate, forced by some current or wave,

perhaps

never to meet again, so also wife, dependents, sons, relations and

wealth

come to you only to separate later. Their separation is inevitable.
