Namaste,

I was in Cuba the year before last and went off the track a little.

What I found was people were poor without starving, they all had tv

sets and accommodation, they had free education including university,

they had free dental and medical completely, there were more doctors

per population than almost any country. In fact from a spiritual

perspective they weren't overwhelmed with the burden of materialism.

There were no luxuries though, unless one had CCU or tourist money.

Most would talk politics in the markets, where people were making

several hundred dollars a day selling souvenirs, or in the other

private businessis like guest houses, restaurants, garages etc etc.

The farmers markets were incredibly cheap and also private enterprise.

They have their own version of democracy, where candidates are chosen

at town meetings and then stand for elections, although there are

other groups there is essentially only one part the CPC. In the West

we have only really two parties, who are indistuingishable and give

the illusion of choice and even Presidents and Courts that steal

elections.

To sum up; Cuba needs to open up a little, the people need one

currency and some more luxuries and necessities. They don't need a

failed system like capitalism, that would strip them of their health

service and free education. At present they can barter their houses

so they don't need big real estate countries screwing things up.

The big generals already have their rich offspring living in Spain

and other countries so that's not much different. If that money was

re distributed things may be a little easier.

In a global warming world Cuba is actually positioned to survive

much more than oil dependent countries. Even the 'privatisation of

the collectives has given rise to much more food, fallow land, and

even good small business with modern growing tecniques with

pesticides.

Would I live there? Not yet.........but when compared with the poor

of the usa cities or mexico or elsewhere there are none in Cuba,

deprived yes starving no.............Tony.
