MANO-NASA

Sanskrit:

Manas: mind, mental faculty, individual thought;

Nasa: destruction

continued:

The same verse when translated into English from Bhagavan's Sanskrit version can read as follows:

"Where this 'I' vanished and merged in its source, there appears spontaneously and continuosly an 'I-I'. This is the Heart, the infinite Supreme Being" [upadesa Saram].

Alan Chadwick translated the same verse of Upadesa Saram into English, and Bhagavan corrected the manuscript. Bhagavan approved in this version the word 'dissapears' as a translation of the word nasa:

" This search pursued till 'I' has disappeared

There now vibrates the 'I-I' all alone

The quest is finished, there is no more to seek.

For this is really the Infinite Self."

Discrimination is necessary between temporary quiesence of mind during sleep or subsidence in yoga nidra when there is a seeming absence of mind, and the complete destruction of identification with the mind: " Absorbtion (of mind ) is of two kinds: laya (temporary stillness) and nasa (permanent destruction). That which is absorbed merely in laya will rise again, (but) if its form dies (in nasa), it will not rise again" [upadesa Saram].

from The Mountain Path, Jayanti 2004
