Guest guest
Aksharamanamalai Before I came, devotees used to go from Skandashram into town only at night and collect bhiksha. They used to eat whatever they got and keep any leftovers for the morning. Lunch used to be provided by Echammal and others. Sri Bhagavan's devotees used to sing Adi Sankara's Adbhuta Vigraha Amarathiswara when they went for bhiksha. People used to put newly cooked food into their bowls. Hearing about this, some other sadhus also began to sing the same songs and collect the bhiksha even before Sri Bhagavan's devotees went there. Perumalswamy, Palaniswamy and others requested Sri Bhagvan to write something new so that when they recited it others would know unmistakably who they were. Then Sri Bhagavan wrote Aksharamanamalai for them. The practice of going for bhiksha had stopped a few months before I arrived in Tiruvannamalai. This was because most of the people had left the town as it had been affected by the plague. http://www.ramanamaharshi.info/Books/kunju_swami.html
