Human beings are entirely lived

Human beings, whatever they may think,

do not live and exercise volition but are

entirely lived. The importance of an indi-

vidual life, and even the fact of living

itself, has been vastly overestimated and

exaggerated. Nature itself defies the human

presumption of the " sacredness of life "

with the strongest possible demonstration

that life is purely incidental to the totality of

the manifest, functional order.
