Namaste Prabodh ji,

Why are you interpreting 'trayOdashi' of the slOkas to mean the

tithi trayOdashi. From the context, isn't it very clear that it just

means the count/number 13. If tithi was intended, then what does

'shOdashi' mean? A new sixteenth tithi or just the count of 16?

I'm not well learned in sanskrit, but to me it is very clear the

slOka means that earlier amAvAsya had occured on 14th, 15th and even

16th day from pourNami (implied and in this case the day of Lunar

Eclipse). But that was the first time, the speaker/narrator is

observing amAvAsya (and hence the Solar Eclipse) occuring on 13th day

from the pourNami (or Lunar Eclipse) and it is unusual.

The reference day for the count seems to be the observed day

(sunrise to sunrise).

regards

Hi everyone

Thought some might be interested in a tropical version of the effect of

eclipses, if not don't read on:

We had a massive scandal early Feb in the UK with regard to bird flu, so I

wasn't surprised to read Raphael's description of the outcome of eclipses in

water signs:-

.....great destruction of fowls and fishes.....

In September last year we had the eclipse in tropical Pisces, and in Feb this

year we sadly witnessed on TV the debacle of hundreds of dolphins with throats

slit still writhing in agony on the shores of Japan ready to be sent to

restaurants.... At the same time we had thousands of turkeys slaughtered in the

UK due to bird flu being transported from Poland to the South of England factory

farm.

Hope the coming eclipse in Pisces (tropical) doesn't give us a return visit to

such scenes

Re: Re: upcoming eclipse

Dear Satish,

One, the (lunar one) was seen before the war, that is why Bhishma says

in earlier shlokas about the Moon being becoming of red hue, and perhaps

the other was to occur within 13 Savana days therefrom and occurred

during the war. Hindus were good astronomers and certainly knew when

eclipse would occur and from where it could be viewed.

Dear Satish,

You made me not only think but do a bit of search and I think what

happened was that the Lunar eclipse occurred 13 days prior to the

beginning of the Mahabharata war, the war itself beginning on Amavasya

which was a solar eclipse. I find Dr. Vartak also interpreting Vyasa's

statements in similar fashion.

The killing of Jaidratha could not have happened at Solar eclipse, if

this is the factual position. It could be that some peculiar cloud

position occurred at that time to make it appear as if Sun had set.

I am sorry to have caused the confusion though it appears that my

contention of Lunar eclipse preceding Solar eclipse appears to be correct.

Dear Prabodh,

I think the link you sent is an old downloaded text that you have. When

I clicked it, I get the sacred texts page with the information that the

Domain is for sale. The shlokas do not appear there.

However I am certain that the trayodashim does not refer to the 13th

tithi (Lunar) as Grahana can not then occur. The paksha may be of 13

days due to Kshaya tithi etc. and the reference could be to that. I

wish some Sanskrit Pandit renders a good translation for all of us to

learn from.

Dear Lien,,

Thank you for understanding me right- I realized, as soon as I've sent the

message that you've touched my own soft spot- My mother is 80 and in a good

shape, but it is scary to see the time flying!

On another note, one cannot change all activities each time eclipse occur.

Best wishes,

Anna
