Dear Sunilji, Ugadi (Kannada, Telugu) derived from yuga, era âdi, beginning; the start of an era) is the new year's day for the people of the Deccan region of

India. While the people of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka use the term Ugadi for this festival, the people of Maharashtra term the same festival, observed on the same day, Gudi Padwa. Kannadigas follow the Lunar Calender, Ugadi falls on Chaitra Shudhdha Paadyami or the first day of the bright half of the Hindu month of Chaitra. In 2008, Ugadi falls on April 6th/7th . The day begins with

ritual showers(oil bath) followed by prayers, and then the eating of a specific mixture of -Neem leaves/Buds for Bitterness & Jaggery for Sweetness. It is called Bevu-Bella" in Kannada , symbolizes the fact that life is a mixture of pleasure and pain, which should be accepted together and with equanimity Depending on the vaara ugadi falls on, the king & his ministers for that year is decided. For 2007 Ugadi was on Monday so the ruler was moon for 2007. Predictions are made accordingly for that year depending on the ruler and his bandwagon. I had compiled an article on this in kannada, I will try to post it after I translate the same to english. All,

As I understand, one way to see when new year starts

we base ourselves on some celestial reference point

... most prominently the Sun and see when exactly our

earth aligns itself with the Sun which manifests

itself as Equinox or Vishuva..

As the very term, Equinox or Vishuva suggests that new

year begins on that date when the Day and Night are

exactly of the equal duration - as per Puranas this

would then be day = night = 15 muhurthas (1 muhurtha

being 48 minutes ).

Does the present scientific ability enable us to

measure from a reference point on the surface of the

earth ( on the equator obviously ) on which date day

and night are of equal duration ? - this ofcourse have

to take into account many other parameters as well.

Could this be an alternative to looking at the Skies

to know when is the new year ? as I believe one key

difference between myriad systems of time reckoning is

the 23 degree axial tilt.

Please throw light.

Regards

Bejoy.

Dear friends,

I have a few questions for you to contemplate:

1. Whether New Year is an astronomical phenomenon? If yes, there are two

Vishuvas and Ayana- Samkrantis. Either of the 4 points can be selected

as reference for zero point of the Year. Equal day and night as well as

the longest and shortest night are observable indications.

2. Why do we then in India follow a sidereal calendar 24 degree

(ayanamsa not axial tilt) different from the observable cardinal points

mentioned above?

3. What is the rationale of a sidereal calendar and new year which takes

into account ayanamsa? or what is the rationale of the Rasis and

Nakshatra based new year?

Sidereal Aries ingress or any other such new year could have achieved

distinction only by some observation or experience. It is here that the

Yogic experience enters Jyotisham. Sun of astronomy is Prana of Yogis.

So every so called transit is a mathematical expression given to the

Yogic experience of Sun through Prana or Prana-Surya.

Sidereal new year as such represents a beginning of the year fixed on

the basis of the bio-cosmic experience of Sun. Each solar month refers

to the interval of 2 major switchings of Prana in the Yogic body -

across the nadis of sun and moon. Either of the 12 transits of Prana may

be taken as the New Year and it is observable in the body of an adept in

Pranayama.

The real test of an adept in Pranayama is that such person must be able

to recognize the solar transits at least from his nadi. Ancient Indian

wisdom has no irrational beliefs. Every concept is founded on yogic

experience as a means to knowledge.
