There are many types of Dasha systems. But, I found that the Vimshottari Dasha is the most reliable. This system is based on the longitude of the Moon. The total Dasha period is 120 years. The ancient sages found out that the maximum life span of a human being is 120 years. Now, in the present day, it is even supported by scientists. They have tested particular parts of the body, and ascertained that it can work for a maximum of 120 years. These 120 years are divided into 12 Signs and 27 Constellations. Each Constellation is divided in 4 Charans. Thus, the total is 27 x 4 = 108 Charans, this with 12 signs makes 120. This is the total of Vimshottari Dasha. The total period of 120 years has been allotted to 9 Grahas. I will use the word "Graha" instead of "planet" because there is a difference. "Planets" and "Stars" are the words used for heavenly bodies. Rahu and Ketu are Grahas, but they are not planets. "Graha" refers to sources of energy, or attraction. Vimshottari Dasha year allotment to each planet: Each planet is allotted years as per the Uccha Rashi or own Rashi Charan of the Nakshatra and the relationship with the sign lord, as shown below: Venus is allotted the maximum number years in Vimshottari Dasha as it is friend to many Signs and Nakshatra – Krittika 4th Charan, Rohini 2, Mrigashira 3, Aaridra 4, Punarvasu 2, Purva 3, Chitra 3, Swati 4, Mula 2, Punarvasu 3, Uttarashadha 4, Shravan 2, Dhanishta 3, Shatbhisha 4, Punarvasu 2, Uttara bhadrapada 3, Revati 4, and 2 years due to its two signs Taurus and Libra. Like this, Venus gets 20 years. The next planet is Sun. It gets one year each from Ashvini 1,Punarvasu 1, Magha 1, Mula 1, Uttara Bhadrapada 1, and 1 year due to its Leo sign, totalling to six years. Comparatgive speeds of the planets determine the periods. Total span of 120 yeqrs is based on the fact that all the planets come to their original posistions or they are trine ti it.Rahu takes 18 years to come yo its original place. Mars takes approximately 7 years to come to its original position . Ketu is considered Yatha MARS. The Jupiter tqkes 16yearsw to reach trine to its original position; and the Saturn takes 19 years. Similarly, Venus takes the longest time, 20 years, to reach its original place . Similarly, Mercury comes to its orogian position in 17 years.
