birth of mercury was due to curses of sages

Vedic astrology and hindu mythology are inexplicably intertwined and

all the planets have the manifestation of sages, gods and demons.

Recently some people called mercury in a derogatory language and this

prompted me to corroborate from the classics as to how these planets

were born and from whom.

 

When sage brihaspati (Jupiter) was appointed as the master (guru) of

devatas, sage sukra (venus) becomes the master of rakshasas and

starts teaching all good things. However, to set right the

rakshasas, Jupiter goes in the disguise of sukracharya and teaches

all bad things to the rakshasas so that the rakshasas fall on their

own bad karmas. Knowing this sage sukra curses jupiter that he gets

insulted for his act of sleeping with his mother. Due to this curse,

Jupiter goes to his brother upadhya's house and sleeps with pregnant

sisterinlaw mamata who is like jupiter's mother. Then upadhya again

curses Jupiter that he too will get the same punishment soon. Later

sasanka (moon) who is the best student of Jupiter sleeps with his

gurupatni tara and begets budha (mercury). It is a different story

later on that jupiter's son kucha loves sukra's daughter devayani and

learns the mritasanjivini vidya from sukra. The name sukra came

because the real name of sukra was usanasa, son of sage bhrigu.

Usanasa steals the entire wealth of kubera and then lord shiva

swallows usanasa and closes all the navarandhras except mutrarandhra

through which sukra comes out alive.

 

After some time surya (sun) begets sani (Saturn) through his wife

chaya and asks saturn to learn the shastras from Jupiter. Then

Saturn goes in the disguise of a Brahmin boy and learns all shastras

from Jupiter and becomes the best student. Knowing that saturn lied,

Jupiter curses Saturn that his aspect will be malefic and he becomes

a tormentor of all humans. Saturn too curses back saying that no

individual in the universe including Jupiter will be spared from the

saturn's malefic affect.

 

From the above, one can understand how the curses of sages shaped the

birth of various planets.
