Dear Gaurav ji,

The word Makara has many meanings.

1)Big Fish

Makara means any kind of Big fish wish sharp teeths, like Shark. In

the incarnation Vishnu took the shap of a Makara Fish the story goes.

Thus any kind of Big Fish can be signified by the word Makara.

2)Crocodile

The word Makara also has the meaning Crocodile. Crocodile is also an

animal that lives in water and has sharp teeths. The geographic

location and nature indicated by Capricon sign is apt to signify

Crocodiles or any other kind of similar animials.

The above two meanings of the word makara are well supported by

ancient sanscrit dictionaries.

Of course Gangaji (Ganga Maiyya) can also have a Makara as vehicle,

let it denote Big Fish, Crocodile or any other water creature.

Because all of them live in water.

The names of signs should not be taken in literal sense. They are

supposed to provide an insite into the things which the sign can

signify.

I will provide you some cute info regarding some such names that are

associated with signs.

* Kriya = Ram [This word denotes Aries]

* Tavuru = Camel [Taurus]

* Jutuma = Coak and Hen [Gemini]

* Kuleera = Crab, Crocodile [Cancer]

* Madhupa = Bees [Cancer]

* Leya = Dear [Leo]

* Pardhona = Women [Virgo]

* Taushika = Whale [sagatterious]

* Akokera = Hippopotamus [Capricon]

* Makara = Shark [Capricon]

* Chetdhasi = Sea Man ((Half man - half fish)), Sea Woman (Half

woman - half fish)

What do you feel?

Love,

Sreenadh

The Sanskrit English dictionary authored by Shri Waman

Shivrao Apte, and published by Motilal Banarsidass ,

also confirms this on Page 415 of the Dictionary.

This is for information of all.

Dear Sreenadh ji,

That was an informative mail, but you have to promise me something. When

you meet Chetdashi (Sea woman- Half woman half fish) You will not go

down in the water with her, but You should allow me the privilege since

I am elder to you and I must check the bottom whether its safe for you

or not.

When I meet a mermaid I will also check alongwith her whether the bottom

of the sea is safe, and then surely allow you to also to visit the

depths.

Love n regards,

Bhaskar.

Dear Bhaskar ji, I was not still good enough in english at that time and while writing that message the word 'mermaid' never came to me, and so the uncultured transilation 'sea woman'. But I was successful in conveying the intended meaning, I believe. Any way don't intend/expect too much with 'bottom' (as could see in your mail)!
