Guest guest
Dear Dhirendra Nath Misra & others, You have raised an important question on 6th verse of chapter 5 of Brihad Jataka. Brihat jataka written by Varaha Mihira is very deep and with multiple meanings or implications as well as usage as against other works. This is very evident from very few verses in the text through which the great scholar & astrologer has covered the subject fully. He himself has mentioned this in his first chapter " bhuuyobhiH paDubudhibhiH paDudhiyaam horaaphalaGYaptaye shabdanyaasasamanviteShu bahushashaastreShu dR^IiSTeSwapi. horaatandramahaarNavaprataraNe bhagnodyamaanaamaham swalpam vR^ittavichitramartabahuLam shaastrapLavam praarabhe.. " " I am starting this book, described as a wooden log to cross the ocean for the most intelligent amongst the intelligent and inspite of many works which are available and rich in literature, logic etc, this work though small is full of cross and multiple meaning (Vrittam means a circle – one point leading to another and back or once can say with core logic). " You can see that Mihiracharya is hinting that inspite of the fact that you (student of astrology) are very intelligent (Only a highly intelligent person can take up study of astrology) and has learned all the available great textbooks on the subject, this book will save you like a log of wood and keep you floating in this vast ocean and help to reach the other shore. So unlike other works, when you take up study of varaha mihira, always keep in in mind that there could be hidden meanings or logic behind these verses. The meaning can never be complete without understanding those hidden implications or factors. Most of the books available, particularly in English & Hindi only have provided the literal & external meaning of these verses. Hence, most think that Varaha mihira has not covered the subject in full. However without learning Sanskrit as a language one cannot understand the depth and logic of these verses. I have written the above only to impress on you the foolishness of just looking into the literal meaning or offhand translation of these verses. Now for the verse you have mentioned. I shall try to keep it as simple as possible, though the explanation & arguments pertaining to logic shall run in pages. " na lagnamindunJa guruurnniriikshate na vaa shashaa~Ngo raviNaa samaagataH sapaapakorkkeNa yuto.athavaa shashii pareNa jaataM pravadandi nischayaat.. " This verse actually speaks of three conditions by which one can judge the credibility of the birth. A word of caution: the first two conditions though indicate that the child's father could be another person, it does NOT imply that the birth is illegitimate. However, the third verse may point to this direction or that the child is " Kritrima " – artificial. Keeping this mind, the conditions are 1) Jupiter does not aspect Lagna or Chandra. The " lagnaminduMcha " is a single word. Hence it also implies that if moon is in lagna but not aspected by Jupiter. 2) Jupiter does not aspect Moon who is along with Sun. 3) Jupiter does not aspect moon who is with sun & another malefic. 1) This as you can see in fact have two conditions. a)Lagna & Chandra are different b)Moon is in Lagna Lagna represents the child and Moon represents the mother. So if Jupiter the guru, the sudha, does not aspect any of them the birth is not sudha. Further the word " jaataM " is prathama dwivachana indicating multiple mother. That is : the child's biological mother could be someone else. In the second condition Mother is in the lagna. Hence child is born of the same mother but the biological father could be different. Pls note that it is not implied that the child is illegal. No malefic planet is mentioned here. The natural question you would ask is why father is mentioned thus: Moon as per scriptures, represent Lord Chandra who appeared in the form of a cock to move away Brihaspathy, husband of Tara to court her. Mercury was their illegitimate child. So moon's position in Kendra hints at the character of " womanizing " or " henpecked " and if Jupiter does not aspect (is moved away) the child thus born will be illegitimate. So Moon here also represents father as Lord Chandra/Soma. 2) Moon is combined with Sun but not aspected by Jupiter. Here Sun definitely represents father & moon represents mother but lagna (Child) is different. So Jupiter as putra karaka does not aspect mother & father, the child's parenthood could be different. Sun though a natural malefic is of lesser order. He is the king with his queen, the Moon. Sun is also considered to be of Satwic Guna while Mars is Rajasic & Saturn –Tamasic guna. 3) Moon is with Sun and also another malefic planet and is Not aspected by Guru. The involvement of another another malefic – either of the two Mars or Saturn involvement of another person in the process of childhood. Mars involvement as rajasic planet, head of the Military of the King (Sun) indicates the child was adopted or born in order to ensure the continuence of the royalty since moon looses her power to bear a child (looses paksha bala) and thus very weak to bear a child. Saturn being of Tamasic guna indicates the child is either artificially(There are valid arguments to this indication) born or is illegitimate. The word used " nireekshite " is very special in this context, instead of the word " Drishti " which implicates the role of an inspector or supervisor or protector. So also is the word " Guru " which means the enemy of ignorance. So Guru's aspect means " looks after as a supervisor and remover of ignorance and foolishness or protects " When we speak of " Aspect " or " Drishti " , we have to understand that this verse further expands and includes other verses where by the " drishti " or " yuti " also includes 1/4th , 1/2 & 3/4 aspect as well as the 5th, 7th & 9th aspect of Jupiter. Simply because it is NOT specified that " Poorna Drishti " " VeeryeNa " is used. Further, the grammatically, the words used are dwiteeya & triteeya and hence lagna & moon's position if not in Jupiter's signs (Dhanu & Meena) is also implied. That is: if lagna or Moon is not associated with Jupiter's signs and the word " SamagataH " implies yoga or association which includes Drekana , Navamsa , Dwathasamsa etc. of Jupiter. The word " nischayat " meaning " as per decided " which again indicates pre-planning. Hence the child born is as per decision taken by two or more people involved. Finaly, if you scrutinize the above you will see that the verse is more useful in Prasna than in Jataka, though it could be used. This verse is best used when some one asks about the legitimacy of the child and prasna is conducted to answer that question and the above indications points to the facts of the birth. Astrology branches to Jataka, prashna, muhurtha, Gola, nimitha & Ganitha.. The Verses & explanations are mixed up in the classical works. Some of the conditions will good for jataka and yet some will be good for prashna, though almost all could be used every where. In short, one has to understand where and how a given condition should be used. A full understanding of the logics and further insights will run in pages. Hope this helps you.
