Navagraha Khestras

From Chennai you can first reach Chidambaram ( Famous Natraj temple) and start

covering the places. If you start from Trichy, then start from Tanjore on the

reverse order.

Vaitheswaran Temple: Glorified by the 6th Century Thevaram, the Tamil name of

the temple is Pulirukkuveluer. Ie Pul + Irukku + Vel + ur. Ur is village. Pul is

bird, here Jadayu, Irukku is Rig Veda, Vel is lord Muruga. This temple is

worshipped by Jadayu, Rig Veda and Lord Muruga.

Legend is when the world was suffering with health problem, Shiva and Parvathy

came as a doctor couples. Hence the name Vaidhyanatha to the lord and the town

is now called in lord’s name. The theertha is called Sidhamirtha theertha and

bathing in the tank and worshipping god and goddess cures one from all health

problems. Lord Mangal had his curse cured here and has a separate shrine in the

outer prahara. Sthala vriksha is neem.

Thiruvenkadu: Thiru is Sri, Ven is white and kadu is forest. Swetharanyam in

Sanskrit. Glorified in Thevaram and Valmiki Ramayana. When Ram, Lakshman and

Seetha were bathing in Godavari and coming out in aranya kanda, valmiki says it

looked like Lord Shiva and Parvathi walking with Nandhi leading the way in

Swetharanya Kshetra.

Here there are three theerthas and bathing in all three theerthas is important.

There is a Vadaranya and shradh can be performed like the brahmakapala. Lord is

in 3 forms here Shiva, Nataraja and Agoraveerabhadra. Hence 3 tanks and 3 sthala

vriksha.

Budha got his nabumsak curse cured and has a separate shrine in the outer

prahara.

Kil perumballam. This shiva temple has a separate Ketu shrine and ketu had his

curse cured here. This temple is not glorified in thevara. Infact the

Thirukketheswaram in Srilanka is glorified in thevaram as the temple worshipped

by Ketu. If possible Thirukketheswaram should be worshipped .The Kilperumpallam

temple though not glorified in thevaram is definitely of before 6th century

origin.

Sun: Sooriyanar Koil: Sooriyan is Sun in Tamil. This is actually 2 temples. The

Shiva temple is called Thirumanagalakudi glorified in thevaram ( it is just

opposite to the Sun temple) and the Navagraha temple opposite to the Shiva

temple.

Kalava Maharishi had Kushtarog and did a severe penance to Navagrahas.

Navagrahas appeared before him and cured his Kushtarog. Since Navagraha’s duty

is to give as per once karma and they donot have any right to cure anybody, they

were cursed to have kushtarog.

The Navagrahas did severe penance to Pranavaradeswara at Thirumanagalkudi and

lord cured their kushtarog. They were told to bless the people who worship him.

The Navagrahas have a separate temple with Sun having the central shrine with

his consorts, Bruhaspathi facing him and all the other seven surrounding him.

Sthala vriksha is Urga ( Erukku) and on Sundays eating curd rice in Urga leaf is

supposed to cure disease.

Kanjanur: Here there is no separate Sukra shrine. Lord Vishnu during

Vamanavatar, pierced the eyes of Sukra when he blocked Mahabali from giving the

land to lord Vishnu. Vishnu worshipped lord Shiva ( Agneswara) for this Sukra

dosha and hence this is a Sukra sthala. Glorified in Thevaram.

Raghu: Thirunageswaram as the name suggest worshipped by the serpent Raghu.

Glorified in Thevaram lord Naganatha swamy is the presiding deity. There two

shrines for Parvathy. Pirainudal kanni on whom the moons rays fall on Karthik

Poornima and Girigujambiga who is having Lakshmi and Saraswathi on her both

sides.

Raghu with his two consorts has a separate shrine in the outer prahara. Special

poojas performed daily on Rahukalams with milk. The milk turns blue during and

after abishekam.

Saturn: Thirunallaru glorified in Thevaram. Thiru + Nal + Aru. Thiru is Sri,

Nal is Nala and aru here is not river. It is cured. ( Arudal) Place where Nala

was cured. When Nala had bath in the theertha ( called Nala theertha now) and

entered the temple Saturn could not follow him and stayed out and thus Nala was

cured by lord Sani. Lord Darbaranyeswara ( Sthala vriksha is Darba grass) and

goddess Bogamartha Poon Mulaiyal . Saturn has a shrine at the entrance.

Taking an oil bath in Nala theertha and worshipping Lord Dharbaranyeswara and

Saturn is advised for Sani dosha. On Saturdays there will be long queue and will

take minimum 6 to 7 hours for darshan.

Moon: Thingalur, Thingal is moon in Tamil. The Thevaram of this temple is

missing but there is a thevaram sung in this temple to cure a devotee’s snake

bite by saint Appar is available. As the name indicates Chandra worshipped Lord

and has a separate shrine.

Guru: Lord Guru has two temples both glorified by Thevaram. In Alangudi

Apatsahyeswara temple, the Dakshinamoorthy is worshipped as Guru and in Thittai

Vasishteswara temple Brahaspathi worshipped Shiva and has a separate shirine

near lord himself.

When visiting these temples also Visit:

Chidambaram Natraja Temple

Thiruvidaimarudhur Mahalingaswamy ( madyarjuna)

Pattesswaram Durga

Thirumananjeri ( Marriage Kshetra)

Thirukkarukavur ( Garbarakshambiga for safe child birth)

Meda Dakshinamoorthy in Mayuram

Big temple in Tanjore and Gangai Konda Cholapuram

If possible to Srirangam and Thiruvanaikovil in Trichy.

Please Note:

The Lord is present in these Shrines for us and giving an easy remedy for lesser

mortals like us. Since we could not do severe penance, he is present in these

temples and by just having a darshan, we will be relieved. Our Rishis pradishta

power, The Tamil saint’s thevara song power and lord’s grace has helped to

sustain this. You will really feel the lord in all these kshetras and the

radiance .

Many are visiting as a one day picnic and focus on grahas only without even

worshipping lord shiva. Since the grahas are in the outer prahara and when the

temple is closed in the noon as per Agama sastras, people just visit the outer

prahara and leave for next.

Please note that it is important to worship Shiva and Paravathy in the temple

first. Bathe in the Tanks. Have Upavas and if not possible have milk and fruits

and take Prasad for eating.

Take 3 days off and visit strictly as per sastras.

Navagraha Kshetras of Tamilnadu

Saturday, August 8, 2009, 1:01 PM

Dear All

I am sending you a small article on the Navagraha Khsetras of Tamilnadu. Our

Great Sages experainced lord all over Bharatavarsha and requested him to be

present there. Their penance, Their Yantra and Prana pradishta are felt even

today.

Hence these kshetras had continuous pujas for centuries. Also are glorified by

the Tamil saints in Thevaram. ( Thevaram is on Lord Siva and Divyaprabandam is

on Vishnu.)

You need to visit atleast once in your life time. Extreme case you can outsource

the Pujas. The dewasthanams of these temples are well maintained and sincerely

perform pujas and you can approach them directly for the conduct of any Pujas.

Please mail me if you want to know anything further on these temple.

Regards

Sankar
