COMBUST PLANETS...!

Dear Vinay_Jee,

 

I would like to raise a question apropos the matter of Combustion or Astangata

planets as accepted by astrologers (Eastern and Western, and leaving aside the

Caizimi -- rapt conjunction of sun with another planet which is believed to

amplify the power or a planet, but let us leave that out).

 

Now, combustion, as we all understand and many of us accept as, is when a planet

is 'apparently' close to the sun and becomes flooded by the SOLAR Luminosity.

Some insist/recommend that the inferior planets (mercury and venus) do not

suffer from combustion 'dosha' due to their proximity.

 

Such a belief obviously maintains that the 'visual' appearance of a planet, its

visible ray is important in the astrological (Jyotish) context. Would that be a

reasonable conclusion?

 

In other words when venus (or any other planet) gets too close to Sun, it loses

its visible rays (kind of similar conceptually as losing in planetary war

(Yuddha), and becomes ineffective or perhaps even malefic.

 

To many minds this may seem very logical, but --

 

If visibility were the criteria for a planet to exert its influence, surely

those born when there were dense and dark clouds in the sky at birth epoch,

astrology should cease to work for those?

 

Or more commonly, what about the births where the earth itself blocks the 'rays'

of the planets that are in the invisible half of the horoscope (nominally in

houses 2 to 6, plus or minus!)?

 

I am very uncomfortable with accepting 'visibility' as even a significant

criterion or factor in attributing astrological influence or participation in

matters astrological!
