Guest guest
Dear madam and/or sirs I am having trouble understanding some things about this subject. I have learned that per my rashi as Dhano I need to recite Vishnu Stotra. I am looking for an mp3 or english translation. I also don't know which is correct to recite. Vishoshshodashanaama Stotram,Vishnurakshaa Stotram,Vishnu Sahasranaama Stotram,Vishnu Shatanaama Stotram,or Vishnu Vijaya Stotram. Please state which one is best for me. If more information is need it will be given. Also is stotram and sahasranam the same thing? Thank you all for your help.
Guest guest
Dear Lakshmi, A simple meaning of the word stotram is - a poem (sung in praise) Sahasranama means 1000 names (of the diety) Shodashanama means 16 names Shatanama means 100 names Dwadasanama means 12 names Almost every main diety has Sahasranama etc Like Vishnu Sharanama, Shiva Sahasranama, Durga Sahasranama. So also Ashtotara (108) etc. Reciting these is very simple and doesn't need much education in rituals. Any one with dedication, faith & devotion can recite them, Unlike Mantra Japa / Sadhana. However do not think they are any less effective than Mantra Japa / Sadhana. In fact they contain the mantras attributed to the respective dieties and you will be reciting them without realising it. So they also are effective if followed with devotion. It is clever method devised by the sages to deliver devine grace to the common man who may not know / cannot / should do Mantra Sadhana. Most of the above could be recited for general well being, inner peace, prospirity etc. The same are used during Pooja / Archana also.  There are also stotras for specific purposes like Rina Mochana stotra, Karavalamba Stotra , Raksha Stora, Vijaya Stotra etc most of which is attributed to charecters in Purana who created them & sung for specific purpose in order to be saved from difficulties etc. In the same sense, we also use them under similar situations. Many of these also have deep phylosophical implications than material. For ex: Rina Mochana does not confine to financial or material burdens alone. It implies debts attributed to life itself. So choose any stotra you want to recite, preferably according to the situation, but recite it with devotion & faith. There are many websites from where you can download the mp3 versions and some play it on the website itself (you cannot download them). Earlier Krishna Ji had given a link to a website. Search for it on this forum. You can also download many of these from cooltoad.com for free. Now-a-days you also can get most in cd's as well. There are also many websites where you can get many of these in Sanskrit as well other languages. try Sanskritdocuments.org Hope this helps you.
