[ a ] Upaya for Solar eclipse [ 1 ] The eclipse upaya should be done when the eclipse is over. If the eclipse goes beyond the sun set , in that case , the upaya should be done next morning after sun rise. [ 2 ] Normally the eclipse upaya should be done when the eclipse isvisible in that area. [ 1 ] SUN + RAHU : All those who have Sun + Rahu in any house of the horoscope shouldimmerse in a river / canal / or sea : a handful of Jau { barley }, sarson { mustard seeds } and kachcha koyala { wood charcoal } [ 2 ] SUN + SATURN : All those who have Sun + Saturn in any house of the horoscope arealso advised to immerse in a river / canal / or sea : a few whole almonds { sabut badam with shell }, and a nariyal { dry pooja nariyal } * a handful of Rewari { a sweet of gur and til } ** * dry nariyal is for Rahu because sun+ Saturn forms neech rahu also ** Rewari is for the ‘mangal ashubh’ because sun+Saturn forms ‘mangal ashubh’ also [ 3 ] SUN + SATURN + RAHU a handful of jau { barley } a few whole almonds with shell a dry pooja nariyal * a handful of Rewari { a sweet made of gur and til } ** * This extra karak of Rahu is added because sun + Saturn form neech Rahu also ** Rewari once again is for ‘mangal ashubh because sun + saturn form ‘mangal ashubh’ If rahu or Saturn have a full aspect on Sun , the sun isaffected but not eclipsed. [ b ] Eclipse and mothers to be All mothers to be { ladies in their family way } have to take a few precautions at the time of any eclipse ; be it lunar or solar. [ 1 ] Take a piece of kalawa { mouli , or the red pooja thread }, long enough to go round the waist. Take this kalawa { mouli } to a temple, place it before lord Ganesh and pray that this kalawa be the 'raksha kavach' for the child in her womb. Come back home and the mother to be should tie this thread round her waist. After the eclipse is over, she should take it off and leave it at the temple after thanking Lord Ganesh to have protected her child from all the ill effects of the eclipse. [ 2 ] Should not come out in the open at the time of the eclipse, nor watch it. [ c ] Mantra to be recited during the Grahan kaal It is generally believed that any mantra recited during the ‘grahan kaal’ gives its results much faster than it would otherwise. Therefore it is suggested that one should recite the following Durga Sapt Shati mantra during the eclipse time : sarvavidha abhyudaya ke liye [ For growth & prosperity all around ] te sammataa janapadeShu dhanaani teShaaM teShaaM yashaaMsi na cha siidati dharmavargaH | dhanyaasta eva nibhR^itaatmajabhR^ityadaaraa yeShaaM sadaabhyudayadaa bhavatii prasannaa || Go to the group files and read this mantra in Hindi script from the Durga Sapt Shati siddha mantra file. This will help in pronouncing it correctly. Sit on a mat or some thing, do not sit on the bare ground. [ d ] When the eclipse is over It is a tradition that a little ganga jal, with tulsi leaves in it, is sprinkled in the entire house. All the utensils and other items of daily use are also given this sprinkle. In the villages the ‘gher’ [ place where animals are kept] is also sprinkled with this ganga jal. In the west UP there is a tradition that those animals who are going to calf are sprinkled with a paint of ‘geroo’ [ a dull red colour mud] before the eclipse begins. This combination of Mars + venus is supposed to protect progeny. The Lal Kitab says " teve wala kabhi lavald na hoga chahe uske santaan yog lakh mande hi kyon na hon " Our ancestors had probably noticed this quality of geroo and that is why till today we have been using it to protect our pregnant stock from the ill effects of an eclipse. If there is a venus + mars ashubh combination in either kundali, but the kundali of the partner may have such Yog which could nullify the venus + mars ashubh yog of the other's kundali, then the progeny could be possible. This will be a redeeming feature. Secondly, if there is a Venus + mars ashubh yog denying a progeny in the kundali, but if in his/her D-7 chart there are redeeming features, then also the progeny is possible. Therefore a venus + mars ashubh combination can deny progeny unless there are other redeeming features either in his own kundali or in the kundali of his partner. Turns the eclipse effect into something tangible, and local! Belief aside, has anyone ever questioned that belief? And other beliefs such as that an eclipse effect arises 6 weeks or months afterwards or whatever? Do eclipses affect all individuals in the 'vulnerable/visble' regions equally? Obviously not or nations would have gotten wiped out! Were any of the mass-scale disasters such as Tsunamis etc coinciding with the eclipse in terms of visibility (regional) etc.? Well, how about individuals who were indeed affected by eclipses negatively or positively? Did anyone examine the presentation of the nodes and the lights in those charts and examine any concordance or absence thereof? Of course the donation is not necessarily of the Karak objects of the Sun, but a very strong tradition is there all the same. It will be quite easy for village folks to donate Gur or Wheat grain because every village home has gur and wheat in the house, but in the cities it might be difficult, the city dwellers may have to buy these things. The advice of immersing a dry Nariyal has been given for the masnuyee rahu formed by this combination. Nariyal has not been used as a substitute of a karak of Saturn. [2] Rahu placed in the 1st house alone eclipses the bhava [house] where the Sun is placed. It does not eclipse the Sun as such even in this situation. The upaya suggested in my article quoted earlier are to be done at the time of a solar eclipse [an astronomical phenomenon] and not for planetary placement in a horoscope. The upaya for a planetary placement in a horoscope may have to depend on quite a few other factors and not on the placement alone. In the example you have quoted, leaving other factors aside, I might have suggested an upaya for Rahu in the 5th, keeping a solid silver toy elephant dipped in ganga jal and for the Sun placed in the 9th, offering arghya to the Sun God every day after adding a little sugar and milk to the water. [3] The effect of the rahu placed in the 5th on the Sun placed in the 9th is not a 'grahan' effect. It is because the Rahu is posited in the 'jar' of the Sun. In this case the upaya has to be such which cools off Rahu and strengthens the Sun.
