One of my closest friend’s sister had married a person from another caste about 20 years back. While his family & community members were against the marriage and tried hard to stop her, he still went through the marriage being a highly educated independent individual. The family members refused to attend the marriage. I forced them to attend it give their blessings. After how can forget their kith & kin. She was a like a younger sister to me as well. As the years went she got promotions in the state govt undertaking and became a deputy director while he remained a sales manager (local) in private company. This developed inferiority complex and day to day life & home became a place of terror. She even purchased land & constructed a house in his name. Now after 20 years & 2 children are living separately due to torture from him. Legally the he has ownership of the house, so they had to move out. Her elder daughter had to call police due to beatings & abusement. It is the story of a love marriage that fell apart. I hear such stories practically every day. While media makes a huge money out of " love " by way of airing programs, cinemas, sale of valentine cards & gifts etc, little do they bring out such stories which are infact the result of foolish infatuations. In the modern world while would not like to talk about caste, status etc, the reality remains a mute spectator. One cannot shut his eyes to the realities of discrimination in one or other, If not regarding the caste, it will be regarding the financial status or other factors. We cannot forget such discrimination happening even in recent times in so called developed countries like USA & Australia. In kerala alone each year about 5000 crore worth of alcoholic beverages is being sold. 40% of this revenue is coming from young lads & gals, a personal revelation from a bar owner who is friend of mine. Other states many not too behind. In fact they might be way ahead. All this in the name of modern living style, developments, freedom & independence. Will the involved industry like to loose their revenue? One may try to brush aside such stories a isolated incidences, the reality is otherwise. The individuals involved refuse to come out publicly due to shame and retribution from family & near ones. This could be the only reason why such stories are not publicized. Little do these young minds realize that, they are only tools & victims of those huge industries. The proof : check the definition of Utility in the text books of any commerce student. Beti, If parents have not accepted this proposal they have a strong reason to do so apart from the social satatus of the boy.
