Guest guest
Dear Rohini ji, Some time back you had asked about Sankara Narayana, due to my suggesting propitiating this deity. Hope you still remember. While going through Koorma Puraana, I came across a reference which I believe could be very basis of this form of the Vishnu. One could see many verses in this puraana similar to what is said by the lord Krishna in Bhagavat Geetha. In one chapter he says that he is shakti traya (durga, laxmi & sarasvati). In the next chapter, Veda vyasa describes his form as Rudra (Maheshvara or Lord Shiva). I am providing a few verses that points to this combination of Rudra & Vishnu as a single form. " yoginaaM hR^idi tiShTantaM yogamaayaasamaavR^itam. kshaNena jagato yoniM naaraayaNamanaamayam. iishvareNaikyamapannamapashyan brahmavaadinaH. dR^iShTvaa tadaishvaraM ruupaM rudraM naaraayaNaatmakam. kR^itaarthaM menire saMtaH svaatmaanaM brahmavaadinaH. sanatkumaaraH sanako bhR^igushcha sanaatanashchaiva sanandanashcha raibhyo.a~Ngiraa vaamadevo.athashukro maharShiratriHkapilo maariichiH. dR^iShTvaatha rudraM jagadiishitaaraM taM patmanaabhaashritavaamabhaagam. " Here I believe, Rudra (lord Mahadev) is depicted as the left side of Pathmanaabha (Vishnu). So indeed there is no surprise that temples pertaining to this deity existed since 100s or even a thousand year back. However, I think the temples are rare & could be found where there is any relation with any Maharishis / yogis & the place. Hope this helps you. A.G.Suresh Babu Shenoy. Guest guest
Dear Gurujis The worship of sankaranarayana is practised in TN even during Pallava period ( 5th century AD). Many of their caves have sankaranarayanan idols and the practise continues till date. In many temples , the dity is adoring the pillars. There is an exclusive temple in a place called sankarana koil near tirunelveli and one in karnataka at " Harihar " near davangere. In this set, The vishnu is on left of siva. regards sankar
Guest guest
Dear Sankaranarayanan, Thank you for the inputs. Harihar in Karnakata do have such a temple. My elder brother used to work there in 80's. The finding of the deity, installed in caves is also interesting as most of these caves were used by Yogis/ rishis for their tapas. This confirms what was mentioned in the Kurma purana. It is good to know that Vishnu is on the left of Shiva. we may have to look more deeply into the meaning etc of what has been been written. It is also possible that Both the positions (Vishnu on the left of Shankara & vice versa) could be found but may have different Sankalpa. It is also interesting to note the link between the position of Ida / Pingala Nadi & Vishnu / Sankara. Perhaps this why this deity is more important to yogis as stated in Kurma Purana. Guest guest
Dear Sir, In the worship of Sankara Narayana,we have to forms of deities to worship. That is both Sanakara and Narayana.Even if idealogies of the followers r different the God is one and the same and in different forms.  If Lord Vishnu represents creativity, the other form represents pralay know for destructions.when both in a unique for representes as sankaranarayana,it conveys the God in any form is one and the same to worship. The same is the case with Hariharan.Ulitimately the Shaivites and Vaishnavaites having different convictions and beliefs will find sankaranarayana and hari Haran as one and the same. The Pallva dynasty respected both sects of thoughts equally and tried to create amity in feelings Vattem Krishnan Cyber Jyotish Services(For all counseling services)Dr.B.V.Raman " Fools Obey Planets While  Wisemen Can Control Them " Planets are neutral Controllers of Mans Karma --- On Sun, 2/21/10, sankaranarayanan k.s <shankypriyan wrote: sankaranarayanan k.s <shankypriyan Re: Sankara Naraayana - Deity.
