Guest guest
Dear All, Obseveration of Deepa (Lamp) and predicting some possibilities based on the Omens observed is part of Prashna methodology. This system is well utilized along with the numerous other tools such as Tamboola Prashna (Prashna based on Beetle Leaves), Akshara Prashna (Prashna based on words and letters uttered by the qurrent) etc. If we go through texts like Prashna marga we can find numerous such useful and interesting tools and its application. But why I am presenting such a simple tool here? Why I am initiating a discussion on such a tool with is not that efficient? It is because I want to show that - "In any holistic branch of knowledge, it is the total understanding that is important rather than the fact - whether the tool is small or big; whether the it is tool with last impact providing numerous details or a simple tool which gives only some simple but useful guidance". In this mail, I only want to start this discussion, by providing the minimum info. Let us start - How may threads (Varti) should be used in a Lamp, which is like the body of a person living in a house; or like the god present in a temple? Eka Vartir maha vyadhiH dwi-vartistu Mahadhanam Trivartir mohamalasyam chaturvartir daridrata Pancha vartistu bhadram syat evamevam nirupanam (Deepa Lakshanam) [One thread indicates great disease. Two threads indicate great wealth. Three threads indicate unconsciousness and laziness. Four threads indicate poverty. Five threads is always good. Like this think about the results (based on number of threads)] That means if the number of threads is 6, then again the result is great disease, if 7 then the result is great wealth, if 8 the result is unconsciousness and laziness and so on. In a Temple Prashna (Deva Prashna) the count of threads can indicate the deities present in the temple or the count of major family branches that had/has special rights on that temple from ancient past. In a family Prashna the count of threads can indicate the number of family members present or the count of major family branches. In a Santana Prashna (a Prashna about children) the count of threads can indicate the children and the threads that extinguished or died-out can indicate the count of children who met with untimely death (whether due to abortion, or accident death or what ever that be). Such holistic understanding derived by the astrologer (even though based on the current planetary position, other omens and so on) but presented as if based on the omens indicated by the lamp alone makes the qurrent wonder struck at the accuracy and usefulness of even the simple tools. This helps the astrologer in creating trust of the qurrent both in the astrologer, astrology and the divinity of the total scenario. Earlier I mentioned that a Deepa (Oil Lamp) is like the body of a person living in a house. Why such a statement? It is based on the quote provided by Prashnamarga as follows - Sneho yasyeha deho bhavati tadudare vartinee vartiratma Jvala chayustadeeye vimala malinate soukhya dukhaH kremena Patram geham sameerou mridu parusha gunau bandhu satru swaroopaH PrashtuH prayena vrittam pisunayati maha devatatma sa deepaH (PrashnamargaH) [Oil indicate the condition of the body, thread that of Atma and the flame indicate longevity. Based on the well being and issues related to these the well-being of body, atma and longevity can be predicted. Similarly the lamp vessel indicate the condition of the house (in which the native resides), and the soft or hard wind indicate the help or troubles caused by friends or foes. In short the lamp, the indicator of the divine will, points all the possibilities of the qurrent (observe it with attention in relaxed mood with understanding, and many possibilities and results will get revealed to you)] Like the whole of astrology, this system called Deepa Lakshana (Omens by Lamps) is also based Agama Sastra (Tantra) rooted in Siva Agama tradition. Why the word "Dee-Pa"? To this query, Siva answers to Parvati, informing especially the imporance of lamp lighted behind the Siva linga, as follows - 'Dee'-yate deerkhamayushyam 'Pa'-ti mrityor gatadbhayal DeepaH ityuchyate devi mama prishte viseshataH [The oil lamp gives (Deeyate = Gives) great longivity (to the one who meditates on the meaning of light - knowledge, consciousness, divinity), and saves (Pati = Saves) from the fear of death (the enlightened one no more fears death, and knows himself as immortal as the divine). This is very reason for calling a Dee-Pa as Deepa; especially the Deepa (Oil Lamp; Light) that is present behind my idol (The lamp behind siva the ultimate, the supreme truth behind siva's idol)] "Maha devatatma sa deepaH" [ Light/Lamp is the soul of the divine]. Deepyate iti DeepaH [it enlightens and that is why the name Lamp]. In the worldly sense - it is good to light the lamp behind the Siva idol in temples. In the spiritual sense - meditate upon the light behind all lights and get enlightened. For an astrologer - both the worldly and spiritual sense of everything is important. He needs to maintain the customs, he needs to reveal the spiritual secrets behind the customs and symbols to the common mass, he need to guide them, he need to encode and decode the encoded secrets present in the customs, idols, symbols and tradition. He is and need to remain the mystic power house and guiding principle due to his inherent knowledge, understanding and holistic approach. This is the path of astrology! Let us continues.....as initiates to this great ancient system of knowledge....... Note: I request all to participate and continue this thread of discussion.Love and regards,Sreenadh
Guest guest
Hare rama krishna dear sreenadh ji Good write up and here ppl r worried abt various dictums and its appliacbility ,But tools like this shows how a real astrologer who is compassionate and satwik ( dont think he shud giv free prediction to every body ) also mantra drashta and devata sidha can use all this kind of tools and predict any thing some exlated souls (astrologers ) just use deepa ,akshara and swara ( breath ) and predict s sri PS iyyer demonstrated it in delhi in the BVB seminar and he handled as much as 35 queries just standing in podium and i heard further followup also shows ( by reserch students ) prediction was true upto 100%.he dont make any charts or was not seems to b worried abt anything .he was just predicting .even he never asked any question back to queriests too . thanks for the nice presentation regrds sunil nair om shreem mahalaxmai namah , "Sreenadh" <sreesog wrote:>> > Dear All,> Obseveration of Deepa (Lamp) and predicting some possibilities based> on the Omens observed is part of Prashna methodology. Guest guest
Dear Sreenaadh Ji, It was very informative. That is why " Akhand Deepa " is given importance in many Parva and Bratas. Akhanda Deepa is also used and mentined for many other prayers and Tantrik Functions / poojas. However, one never ponders over the number of Varties (baaties) and the conditions of Varties after that. It was enlightening. regards. Guest guest
Dear Sobhana ji,//That is why "Akhand Deepa" is given > importance in many Parva and Bratas. Akhanda Deepa is also used and > mentined for many other prayers and Tantrik Functions / poojas.// Yes. Akhanda Deepa = Unbroken light (The undivided supreme light; the ultimate; the divine). It is a symbolic custome that remainds us of Brahma Deeksha (Search of the ultimate) of every seeker of truth. //> However, one never ponders over the number of Varties (baaties) and > the conditions of Varties after that. It was enlightening.// Deepa Lakshana system of observing Omens by Lamps does not limt itself to Varties (baaties) alone! The following items are important, pondered over and quotes available related to most of the same as well. 1) Customes and prayers that should be followed while observing Deepa Lakshana 2) Flame (Jvala) 3) Thread (Varti) 4) Oil (Sneha) 5) Vessel (Patram) 6) Environment (such as the influence of wind; Omens observed while lighting of lamp etc) 7) Correlating Flames with directions (Dik chakra) and deriving results 8) Correlating Deepa Lakshana with the Nakshatra, Tithi, Vara etc of that day. So it is an elaborate system in itself with more deapth than visible right now in the forum. This was the very reason for the request to ponder over the same. It is not that simple or limited as it seems to be at the surface. The point is - even such simple systms has numerous things to teach us when pondered over! This itself is the beauty of astrology!Love and regards,Sreenadh , "Shobhana" <shobhana_ms wrote:>> Dear Sreenaadh Ji,> > It was very informative. Guest guest
Dear Prashant ji, Thanks.//The tambula part is also a indicator isnt t if one is giving it with respector a show or a routine one and in if it is fresh or withered? the no offruits, flowers, the color, taste, usefulness f the fruit to the Scholar allthiese gives us clues, and this is a far better approach than expectingsometing if they r satisfied with our work , the respect is mutual here andreciprocal.// Of course the Tamboola Prashna is another such good tool when applied with due respect and understanding. Since that too is a big subject when discussed in detail, let us keep it as a separate thread if we want to discuss it. Every tool - whether it be the Kota Chakra, Sarvato Bhadra Chakra, Deepa Lakshana, Tamboola Prashna, Swara (Breath), Akshara Prashna - they are all important and can illuminate our understanding about this great knowledge stream called astrology, if pondered deep with good logic and with an inquisitive and energetic spirit. Guest guest
Dear Sobhana ji and all, I am elaborating on Deepa Lakshana as a continuation of my previous write-ups.History of Deepa Lakshana This method of observing omens by Lamps is more than 200 years ancient. Valmiki Ramayana speaks about Agni Lakshana. The great literary work Raghuvamsa by Kalidasa written more than 1600 ago tears speaks about Agni Lakshana. The texts like Brihat Samhita and Brihat Yogayatra written more than 1450 years ago also speaks about Agni Lakshana elaborately. Even the Puranas like Agneya Maha Purana speaks about Agni Lakshana. It is this ancient branch of knowledge known as Agni Lakshana (Omens by Fire) is popularly applied in its modified form as Deepa Lakshana (Omens by Lamps) in today's world. By the time of texts like Prashna Marga by Edakkattu Nambutiri (15th century) and Prashna Kautuka by Uzhutra Varyar this system fully developed and became an integral part of the Ashta Mangala Prashna system well-popular in South India. Due to its antiquity and also due to its ability to point in the direction of truth, this system of observing Omens indicated by the lamps is well respected. Prashna - Anushtana (Methodology of Prashna) Swasta chitto viviktastaH samarbhyachya ganadhipam Nijan gurun devatascha suryadeemscha navagrahan Suryabhimukha aseetva mounee samyak hrideeswaram Dhyanannalochya sakunan prashnam prarabhatam budhaH (Prashna Anushtana Paddhati) [With a peaceful mind, unaffected by anything, after worshiping God Ganesha, own gurus and Nava grahas starting with Sun, silently meditating the divine at heart, the astrologer should sit facing sun (facing eastern direction). After observing the omens and thinking about them (and the astrological concepts) the intelligent astrologer should start the Prashna (with a peaceful attentive and bright consciousness)] Prayer Antar gyotir bahir jyotiH pratyag jyotiH paratparaH jyotir jyotiH svayam jyotiH atma jyotiH sivosmyaham (Deepa pooja)[Light inside, light outside, light ahead and light behind. Light everywhere! I am light! Soul is light and I am Siva!] Astrology is Agama sastra - the knowledge that flow from Siva to Parvati. Siva is the ultimate guru and Parvati the ultimate disciple. (Every disciple is a female in love with his lover the Master; knowledge being the thread of love between them). Only Siva knows about the past-present-future; Only Siva is the Trikala Jnanam (Knowledge of the 3 states of time viz. Past-Present-Future); If not Kala-Kala (Time beyond the Time; the one beyond time; the one causing end to time) the Siva who can know the time?! Sun is the symbol Siva, causing the time changes such as day and night for us living in earth; that itself is the reason for Sun being considered as the significator of Siva. Sun and Moon are source of light on earth. Sun and Moon are symbols of the ultimate male-female polarities Siva and Sakti. So let us pray to them and also to that light behind all lights. Tvam jyotiH sree ravischandro vidyul souvarna taraka Sarvesham jyotisham jyotir deepajyotiH namostu te Subham karotu kalyanam arogyam sukha sampatam mama buddhi prakasam cha deepa jyoti namostute. (Patma Purana)[Oh! Sun and Moon! Oh! Stars! You are all light sources! I bow before that ultimate light which is the light behind all these lights. I bow to the lamp (light) that is the symbol of that ultimate light. Do good me, provide me with well-being, health and wealth, enlighten my intellect, I bow to thee!]Procedure As per the guidance given by the elders, an innocent child who does not know anything about astrology (signs and planets), after taking bath, wearing clean dress, should come forward and pray to lamp, God Ganesha and Grahas. Then from some revered place ilke the temple he/she should get the flame that should be used to light the lamp; or should light the lamp himself/herself, with a pleasant mind, with attention. While the kid is lighting the lamp, the astrologer should carefully observe the omens (especially related to the lamp) that happens. Then complete the prayer, let the all the people sit relaxed and start giving the interpretation systematically (as guideded by the texts and tradition). Time Indication Sarva prashneshu sarveshu karmasvapi viseshataH Prasadenaiva deepasya bhavishyal subhamadisel (Prashnamarga)[in all Prashanas (related to matters such as Ayu Prashna, Vivaha Prashna, Santana Prashna etc) and in all auspicious acts (such as Marriage, Laying foundation stone for house -temple etc) the omens by lamps can be observed. It specially indicates the auspiciousness of the future] From this it is clear that Deepa Lakshana mainly indicates the results related to the future (than with the past, or present); even though it is evident from many quotes that it also indicates past and present results. What is meant by the word DeepaH (Lamp) ? We may doubt whether the word DeepaH indicate Lamp vessel (Deepa Bhajana) or the Flame (DeepaH Jvala)? Since the quality of providing light (Deepyate = providing light) is common to Flame and to the Lamp (since the flame is in the Lamp). The clarifies this doubt and provides us with a clear defenition of the word Deepa as used in Deepa Lakshana context. Snehadhishtana vartyagni samyogo yavadeeryate Tavad deepasya deepatvam deeyate deerkhamayusham (Prashna Kautuka)[Oil, Vessel, Thread, Flame - these items together is meant by the word Deepa (Lamp); it is only when they combine, the quality of light is gained by the Lamp] From this it is evident that when ever the word 'Deepa' is used in Deepa Lakshana context, it points to all these 4 items. While observing the omens by Lamps the good and bad things and omens related to all these 4 items should be observed and interpreted in detail and then only the auspicious and inauspicious indications can be clearly understood. The cleanness of all of the above items indicate auspicious results and dirty unclean state indicate inauspicious results. But the question remains - What are the results that should be interpreted and understood based on the omens indicates by these inter related items that makes a coherent whole such as the Oil, Vessel, Thread and Flame? What is the systematic way to approach this subject? What are the results that can be indicated? When we ponder we are going deep - and more and more innovative information comes by! And we wonder again and again, who the ancients had pondered over and hidden such wonderful info in even such simple tools and methodologies?!! And the love for astrology remains and continues to grow!Love and regards,Sreenadh , "Sreenadh" <sreesog wrote:Dear Sobhana ji,//That is why "Akhand Deepa" is given > importance in many Parva and Bratas. This itself is the beauty of astrology!Love and regards,Sreenadh > > , "Shobhana"> shobhana_ms@ wrote:> >> > Dear Sreenaadh Ji,> >> > It was very informative.
