Guest guest
Dear All, * Hipparchus (BC 160; Born in Turky, lived in Rhodes in Greece, possibly made many star observations from Phoenicia in Lebanon) considered the the Zodiac Circle to be composed of 21600 min. * Hipparchus used a fixed Sidereal Zodiac (with a fixed starting point) like the Ancient Indians and NOT the tropical zodiac. ===> ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hipparchus ) Hipparchus .............. tabulated values for the chord function, which gives the length of the chord for each angle. He did this for a circle with a circumference of 21600 and a radius (rounded) of 3438 units: this circle has a unit length of 1 arc minute along its perimeter <=== * Some assume that the Surya Siddhanta concept of 21600 Prana constituting the zodiac circle is an adoption of this Hipparchian concept!! ===> ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hipparchus ) He described the chord table in a work, now lost, called Toon en kuklooi eutheioon (Of Lines Inside a Circle) by Theon of Alexandria (4th century) in his commentary on the Almagest I.10; some claim his table may have survived in astronomical treatises in India, for instance the Surya Siddhanta. Trigonometry was a significant innovation, because it allowed Greek astronomers to solve any triangle, and made it possible to make quantitative astronomical models and predictions using their preferred geometric techniques. <== * The surya Siddhanta equates Prana as one of the base unit of time and considers 21600 Prana (breaths) as the day of a human being and also that 21600 minutes constituting the Zodiac circle. Brahmanda Pindanda correlation and Prana kalana (counting of breath) forms the base of Surya Siddhantic concepts. * Surya Siddhanta also uses a Siderial Zodiac with a fixed starting point which starts at Meshadi/Aswinyadi. * Both Surya Siddhanta and Hipparchus used Polar coordinates, but Ptolemy dropped the use of Polar coordinates and started used equatorial coordinates. Indian astronomy based on the Surya Siddhanta tradition flourished by the use of Polar coordinates (Dhruvanka), which even today traditional astrologers use for calculation. What do you think? * Do you think that Ptolemy who never adopted/used/followed the Sidereal Zodiac and corrupted the star catalogue of Hipparchus as the continuing tradition of Hipparchus? * Do you think that Ptolemy of AD 200 who dropped the use of Polar coordinates (Dhruvanka in Sanskrit) truly understood the methodology and philosophical background and concepts of Hipparchus? (Even Ptolemy's PI value was less accurate than Hipparchus's) * Do you think Hipparchus learned/adopted astrology from Indian Surya Siddhantic Tradition, or do you think that he might have learned astrology from Babylonian, or some Phoenician tradition? (Phoenician = Panis; they are mentioned even in Vedas. They were non-vedic) * Do you think that Surya Siddhanta borrowed all its philosophy of Prana, Yoga, Breath-Zodiac correlation (Brahmanda-Pindanda correlation), Mathematical perfection etc all from Hipparchus? * Do you think that Hipparchus borrowed from Surya Siddhanta or Surya Siddhanta borrowed from Hipparchus or that both the knowledge came from some common tradition such as that of Meluhan (Mleccha) tradition of Sinddhu Sarasvati or the Phoenician (Pani) tradition? Just sharing some thoughts.
