Hello All,

As we all know some mantras are referred to as " mahamantras "

I had a list of maha mantras some where but I am now not able to find it in my

library. If my memory serves me right there are 5 of them, four of them being 1.

gayathri 2. Maha mrithyunjaya 3) sri ram jai ram.......4) hare ram....hare

krishna......... and I cannot remember the fifth one. Is it " om namah shivaya "

by any chance? can anyone throw some light on this?

Regs,

Anita

Namaste Ms Anita ji,

//3) sri ram jai ram.......4) hare ram....hare krishna// = Do not

qualify as mahamantras, for they are derived or created

ones.....similarly the popular Hanuman chalisa....

The mahamantras are the ones, which are directly given to devotee by the

God/Goddess...... ... a variety of these slokas/mantras are those

inspired by the devotee when he gets vision of the God/Goddess....

example: mantras which are attributed to Sri Adi Shankara - Kanaka

Dhara Mantram...

If you carefully observe the mantras including Vishnu & Lalita

Sahasranamavali are all are devotee inspired mantras.....

Shanti mantras - are also mahamantras.

Remember " Times Music " had a CD of Mahamantras....{www.indiatimes.com }

HI,

What I know about mahamantras is what I gleaned from a book by chinmaya mission

which I have since donated to a mandir along with a lot of other books..

Japa yoga by swami shivananda of divine life society is a good book but does not

mention any mahamantras.

Regs,

Anita

Dear Anitaji,

Japa Yoga by Swami Sivananda is the finest book on Mantras which one can

possess. It does mention about Mahamantras. It mentions clearly how much

number of times one should recite, how much time it takes to recite

those mantras in slow speed, medium speed and fast speed and also if I

remember well, the Purashrcahan method also.

We do not need much knowledge about these. What we already have must be

digested and applied. I mean any Mantra which we like if we are able to

recite a particular number of times daily and regularly is known as

" Application of Knowledge correctly " . rest collection of knowledge does

not make much sense, for it can bedone for the next hundred Life times,

and yet one would be wanting more. This want of man to collect

" Knowledge " is also known as one of the " Vasanas " which must be

dispensed with, at one or the other point of his Life, if one wishes to

progress spiritually. because there is no end to gaining knowledge.

Application of known knowledge is what is required much more than

collection of knowledge.

best wishes,

Bhaskar.

Namaste Ms Anita ji,

To my memory the book published by Chinmaya Mission consists of the

following mantras: {Daily prayers}

1) Mahamrutyunjaya

2) Ganesha Stotram

3) Sharada stotram

4) Saraswati stotram

5) Gayatri

6) Shanti mantras

7) Laxmi stotras {morning wake up + before and after meals}

8) Two more are there in this book.... memory failing here....

that book costs Rs. 10 or so.... can be purchased again from Chinmaya

Mission on Lodhi Road opposite to Meterological Bhavan.

Namaste Ms. Anita ji,

Alternatively, you can buy the book of sanskrit mantras from Chinmaya

Mission. This compedium costs Rs.75-100 and contains all important

mantras that one recites in an YEAR...!! This includes popular Lalita +

Vishnu + ... sahasra namavali...

the point No.8 in my earlier post = Lingasthakam is given in the Rs.10

book of daily prayers...

HI,Just before I logged in and saw your mail, I had checked out the book myself. In the list it mentions only 2 mantras 1) gayathri and 2) shri krishna mantra as maha mantras. Yes, it is a wonderful book. I have enjoyed reading it. Try reading his book "Mind, its mysteries and control " if you haven't already. It is a masterpiece on "MIND".

Anita

Dear Sreeramji,

Books are one of my bigger weaknesses..And I have a whole lot of them. My husband and my daughter too love books and we have a small library itself at home which is a space of 7X8' packed wall to wall with books. I had so many books on spiritualism and religion, I donated a few boxes to a dhyan mandir being built at my native place in my grand father's memory. It has not been inaugurated yet as my aunt who had spearheaded the project suddenly passed away in oct last of a heart attack. Now it has become every bodys and nobodys business.....Thanks all the same.
