Guest guest
Kochi coast dreams of offshore oil find- Kochi, July 31: The visit of ONGC top brass to the port city planned for Sunday has sparked rumours that the stat-run agency has discovered oil deposits in the Kerala-Konkan basin.A high level team of ONGC officials lead by its Chairman & Managing Director, R.S. Sharma, is arriving here on Sunday to conduct a press conference but ONGC sources said they are here for the official inauguration of offshore deepsea drilling.Though the geophysical field team of the ONGC had found traces of oil in Kerala-Konkan basin as early as 1977, there were serious reservations about the yield. In 2006, ONGC employed the service of Geosearcher, a Norwegian seismic-survey ship, to find evidence of oil in the KK basin, located 55-nautical miles (102 Km) off the Kochi shore. The survey ship was equipped with modern technology which could measure the depth of the oil cache as well as the quantity. Thus the data from the survey ship could be used to conduct a feasibility study.Later that year, another survey ship owned by a London based company conducted a comprehensive survey of the Kerala coast. The ship mapped sea floor from the Kochi coast to Ponnani.Last year, ONGC CMD Sharma elaborated on plans to re-start exploration off the KK coast. "The Kerala-Konkan coast, which has a lot of potential, is very much in the focus of the corporation," he said. The ONGC had undertaken an exploration in the region in 2004 which had not yielded the 'desired results', the CMD had said. Later in 2008, Norsecot, commissioned by ONGC began experimental drilling off the Kochi coast. A floater type energy driller rig, capable of reaching 3500 meters into the sea was employed. More than 100 experts including geologists worked around the clock collecting soil samples and analysing them for traces of Hydro-carbons. Malavika, a supply vessel owned by the Shipping Corporation of India provided support to the exploration. In Early 2009, there were unconfirmed reports that the team had struck gold. The exploration was reported to have found traces of hydro carbons at a depth of 1500 mtr. However there were still no reports on the size of the cache
