Dear friends,

Namaste,

Sorry to point out Kaulji's poor sense of humour. The Sun moves one-twelfth of

the ecliptic in one month and Brihaspati also  moves one twelfth of the

ecliptic in one solar year. So it is natural that the ancient astronomers named

the twelve segments of the ecliptic as twelve Rashis and they had chosen to

identify these Rashis  by the shape of the formation of the stars within it.

This was astronomically necessary for describing the location of the grahas at

different times. This is an empirical nomenclature without any etymological

background. It is deplorable that Kaulji is ignorant about this need for

identification of the Rashis and yet he is trying to  make fun of our

ancient astronomers by seeking some real animal behaviour from the name of the

Rashis.  If Kaulji thought that there should be better ways of identification

of the Rashis then had anybody prevented him from coming out with his

suggestions for alternative and more

appropriate names?

Regards,

Sunil K. Bhattacharjya

Dear friends,

Namaste!

Let me tell you some astrological jokes! Aries i.e. a ram is moveable, i.e. it

moves, but Taurus the Bull is fixed! Is it waiting for being attacked by the

ram? Gemini the dual bodied is dwisvabhava i.e. ambivlent! That must be the real

astrological sign of jyotihis since almost all of them are ambivalent when

making predictions!

Cancer the crab is moveable but the lion is fixed! Must be waiting for the crab

to mount it! And Virgin is again ambivalent. I understand that--all virigins,

whether male or female, are always amibavlent!

Scales is moveable! That beats me hollow! On the other hand, Scorpion is fixed!

Must be waiting for being weighed in scales! The horse-riding- archer is

ambivalent! I hope we do not have such archers in our armed forces at least!

A crocodile, no doubt is moveable, and the pitcher is fixed! So the crocodile

will go into the pitcher! And the two-fishes are again amibivalent! Dithering

like some of our netas!

And the tail pice-of all these hilarious postulates is that all these rams and

bulls and twins and crabs and lions and virgins and scales and scorpions and

archers and crocodiles and pitchers and fish are imaginary figures, of a still

more imaginary " circle of animals " known as zodiac---Rashichakr a! The height of

this hilarious tale is that all the imaginary animate and inanimate bodies are

equal to one another in every respect, including the weight and size etc. etc.

I have read Arabian Nights in my college days! But am surprisied that that work

did not include such fantastic tales as the ones just narrated above.

no doubt " astrology does not need any proofs " for being a phantasmagoria baseed

as it is on such " fantastic " facts!

With regards,

A K Kaul
