Dear Rajendra Bhatt ji, //Is it enough for a planet to be placed in any one (of the 12 vargas)

malefic varga to give adverse results? Or do we take average of 12

varga placements (benefic/ malefic)?// Each varga position can produce its own result (actually there also 7-types of results) as well described by the classics. For example remember results such as - "If 7th lord is in the navamsa (9th division) of benefic, then the native will have beautiful waist" etc. Similar results using various techniques (7-fold as in the case of natal charts) are available for Divisions (Amsas/Vargas) as well. But when the question is NOT about RESULT but about STRENGTH of a planet or house, then just the count benefic/malefic division is considered (out of 12). Generally a planet in benefic varga (placed in benefic divisions) will give benefic results and a planet in malefic varga (placed in malefic divisions) will give malefic results. But it is not good or useful to resort to such general statements; since like in the case of natal charts it is the actual results that matters and not the vague statements like good/bad, benefic/malefic etc. In truth every planet can and will provide BOTH good and bad results (try to say what results and not just good bad) at the same time. In the same way if a planet is placed in some division, it will give BOTH good and bad results corresponding to it. Take an example and try to understand better. Question: For a Leo lagna native Sun is placed in Aries 3 degree. What are the results you will predict for Kshetra (D1), Hora (D2), Drekkana (D3), Chaturthamsa (D4), Panchamamsa (D5) etc up to D12 for that planet? Exploring the answer to even such a single question can help us to move much much forward in our understanding of astrology and techniques and tools to be used in interpretation using divisions as well.
