Guest guest
Dear Matthias: Star sapphires are much cheaper than regular blue sapphires. I'm not quite sure what you mean by " pure as blue sapphires. " If you are talking about clarity then no. One reason that star sapphires are less desired is that they are an opaque stone. If you mean " pure " as in natural, then yes, they are a natural stone. Though you need to be careful as their are many lab created on the market just as most blue sapphires available are heat treated. Star sapphire is named for its distinctive six ray star when viewed under a single light source. The star effect is known as " asterism. " the value of these stones is based on symmetry, orientation, definition, color and clarity of the star. Here's a comparison between two stones that I have for sale just to give you a sense of the difference in cost. Faceted oval, eye clean, great color, untreated blue sapphire Blue Sapphire from Sri Lanka, 3.1 carats, 8.38 x 6.3 x 6.30 mm. This is a really fine Jyotish gem, retails for $3400. Oval Cabochon, untreated, black star sapphire, 10mm x 8mm, very high AA quality retails for $210.
