Guest guest
Dear Professor, There are many Western calculations of Sunrise and Sunset (astronomical, nautical, civil, and sunrise/sunset): http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/aboutastronomy.html In SA/Vedic thought, how are Sunrise and Sunset calculated? Guest guest
Hello dear Vyas, There is no special way for these in SA. As usual it is calculated through astronomy. SA is for predictive techniques. Guest guest
Dear Professor, Thank you. My query was because I wanted to know what the actual time is to perform Surya Namaskar. Guest guest
Hi Liu, Phrased another way, does Sunrise begins when the LEADING EDGE of the Sun is visible on the horizon? If we match the ascendant with the exact degree of the Sun as you suggest, we are looking at when the CENTER of the Sun is lined up with the ascendant. Whatever the answer, it's outside the scope of this forum. If anyone knows the true answer, they are welcome to email me off list. Thanks. Guest guest
Astronomically, mathematically speaking, yes I suppose sunrise would be when the centre of the orb rises up to the eastern horizon. But then how about if there was a hill on the eastern horizon? Would it mean the sunrise is now a little later because the horizon is now higher? What if the sky is heavily overcast and the sun is not visible at all? Would it mean there is no sunrise that day? For purposes of Surya Namaskar, I think the best definition of Sunrise would be when the first glimpse of the orb is seen (the time will remain the same even if the sky is overcast).
