Question on Plus/Minus in Jyotish Tools

Brian,

A friend of mine who was recently given a particular time to wear the kavach

has raised a valid point which I thought warrants your kind attention.

This person lives in Sydney. Sydney time now is GMT +10 hours but Jyotish

Tools indicates - (minus) 10 hours for Sydney. In Jyotish Tools times of

all places east of Greenwich are shown with a minus sign and places to the

west of Greenwich with a plus sign. But then we know that in practice it is

the other way round. For a place like a Sydney to get Sydney time we need

to ADD 10 hours to GMT, not SUBTRACT as shown in Jyotish Tools.

Could you explain this anomaly please. Thanks.

Kind regards

Re: Question on Plus/Minus in Jyotish Tools

You are confusing the use of time zones. Time zones as given on the

Internet are for figuring the time at a location given GMT. But in

astrology we know the time at the location and need to know the time GMT

(or actually UTC). This is because the planetary calculations are based

on GMT. So the sign of the zone is flipped. So if it is 10 AM in

Sydney then it is midnight GMT. You have to subtract 10 hours from

Sydney time to get GMT.

I am currently focusing on Google's Android platform. In the US the

T-Mobile G1 uses that platform and phones by Samsung and Sony Android

phones have been announced. These along with other HTC phones will

begin appearing in other countries too. I have one free application,

GPS Prasna available on the Android Market and will release Quick

Jyotish for the 1.5 Android OS in the next few days. A Jyotish Tools

for Android is in the works.
