Respected Girish ji,

You are right. Lal Kitab does advise to keep water in a sponge for

Mercury in the 12th while the moon is in the 2nd.

This upaya is mentioned in the 1952 edition [ page 584, #21 ] . There

is no mention of this upaya in any other edition of the Book.

In 1952 edition it says :

“bagair bartan pani va sponge vagairah qayam rakhana, rizaq, rozgar

va aamadan ke liye mubariq hogaâ€

The spirit of this upaya is that ( i ) water [ moon] should be

established; ( ii ) and that there should be no mix of mercury in it

i.e. it should not be kept in a utensil. That is why it has been said

that water be established but without using a ‘bartan’ to keep it.

The logic of the upaya : Since the moon is already in the 2nd house,

a place where it is considered as exalted and yet , for some reason,

the native is not doing well in terms of earning and livelihood then

it means that the moon isn’t strong and has gone weak for some

reason. Therefore establishing moon would be a good option. But the

moon has to be reinforced in such a way that there is no mix of

mercury in it which is placed in the 12th house, a house of its

debility; hence the alternative of sponge which is not a utensil or a

pot.

Would love to hear from other experts if they have any alternative

explanation.

Regards,
