Varun ji, i came across a news item in today's " the tribune " it says

that a dhuna was got started by a saint at fort Qilla Mubarak from

the founder of Patiala Royal dynasty with instructions that till the

time it is kept alive the dynasty will survive. It has been kept

alive/ smouldering continously for over 257 years. The peculiar thing

about this is that only DHAK wood is used in it. The quantity used

daily is between 4-5 quintals . Can this have an explanation with

referrence to lalkitab. Only dhak wood is used and smoke emits out all

day and night. Don't know what they do to the ash. Regards. Kulbir.

Dear Kulbir bhai,

When the yaggopavit [ janeu ] ceremony is done, the new initiate is given a dand

[ stick ] of dhak wood. With this dand the new initiate acts out as if he is

going to gurukul for studies. The initiate goes out of the village, where his

mother persuades him to come back home.

The dhak dand [ stick ] being given to a new initiate going to a gurukul is

significant. To my mind this represents Mercury, an initiation into the worldly

ways.

Lal Kitab also suggests that dhak signifies Mercury.

Mercury is made up of Jupiter + rahu. If the rahu [smoke] is eliminated then

what remains behind is Jupiter. Thus burning dhak wood could amount to

establishing Jupiter extracted from mercury.

Quite possible that the saint, who advised this ritual, knew that the mercury

is badly placed in the horoscope of the kingdom. [ yes, a kingdom also has a

horoscope as do nations.] Therefore the saint suggested this ritual. That could

be one explanation.

If the dhak wood is taken to represent mercury [ dhak] + Saturn [ wood] then

also after Rahu is disassociated from mercury , the final residual is Jupiter +

Saturn, which again is not a bad combination. That could be another explanation.

Other experts may also comment.

Have a nice day,

Varun Trivedi

Varun ji,

Thanks for the explanation, it seems logical. I collected

some additional information. The dhuna is not build in ground floor.

So there could be a mechanism that the ash drops down through

something like jaali.

Respect and regards.

Kulbir.
