For Mercury in the 9th house the Arun Sanhita says mangal ya surya dono ke sath se lisoode ki gitak ki bhanti bhagya ka hal hoga [mande arthon mein]. But for the mercury and sun combination in the 9th house the book says rajdarbar aur vidya ke liye dono grahon ka 24 sal ki umra se nek aur shubh asar hoga jo 34 sal ki umra se aur bhi barhega. In between we have the ages of the sun and moon. Therefore raj darbar [sun] and taleemi taalluk [moon] getting adversely affected is understandable. This accounts for till the age of 24 [moon] The age of 25-27 is that of venus which has been included in the ‘manda’ period in a general sense because of the hostility of the Sun with the venus. Let us first have a look at what the original texts say about mercury alone and also for sun and mercury together in the 9th house. Mercury in the 9th house: “mangal ya sooraj ya dono saath se lasoode ki gitak ki tarah kismet ka hal hoga [mande mayanon mein] aur umra ka mangal bud ya khud [budh ka zamana 13,15,17,28,34 va saal mahine ka din] na kabhi nek aur khushhal hoga†[page 147; 1941 urudu edition] “mangal ya sooraj ya dono ke saath se lasoode ki gitak ki tarah kismet ka haal hoga [mande mayanon mein]. aur umra ka mangal bud ya khud budh ka zamana [1,4,13,15,17,28,34 va saal mahine ka din] na kabhi nek aur khushhaal hoga vaste umra†[ page 197 ; 1942 urdu edition] “mangal ya sooraj ya dono ke saath se lasoode ki gitak ki tarah kismet ka haal hoga [mande mayanon mein] aur umra ka mangal bud ya khud budh ka zamana [ 1,4,13,15,17,28,34 va saal mahine ka din] na kabhi nek aur khushhal hoga vaste umra.†[page 569 ; 1952 urdu edition] The author is consistent, in all the three editions, about the result of mercury in the 9th house. If it is with the Sun and/or Mars then the life will be like lasoode ki gitak [useless] Mercury with the Sun in the 9th house : “lasoode ki gitak ka sa haal hoga. 17 - 27 saala umar manda asar hoga,vaaste raaj darbaar taalimi taaluk. 24 saala umar se dono ka phalmubarak hoga, aur jo 34 se tarika par hoga ''[ page 252; 1941 urdu ed] “ lasoode ki gitak ka sa haal hoga. 17-24 saala umra manda asar hoga. vaaste raj darbar, taleemi talluq 24 sala umra se dono ka phal mubarik hoga aur jo 34 se taraqqi par hoga†[page 277; 1942 urdu edition] “ khana 9: vaaste raj darbar aur taleemi talluq dono grahon ka 24 saala umra se nek asar aur mubarik phal hoga jo 34 saala umra se aur bhi taraqqi par hogaâ€[ page 809 ; 1952 urdu edition] If you notice, the phrase ‘ lasoode ki gitak ka sa haal hoga’ has been dropped in the 1952 urdu edition. This phrase does not occur any where in the entire section on sun and mercury in the original urdu edition of 1952. I do not know whether the phrase has been dropped intentionally or it is an oversight. But a meticulous person like Pt. Roopchand ji could not have done it as an oversight. It must have been intentional. Let us explain this: If the phrase ‘lasoode ki gitak ka sa haal hoga’ has been intentionally dropped then there could be two possibilities: [a] the statement was found to be not tenable The author is pointing at some other possibility. On the face of it, if the mercury is in the 9th house with either the sun and/or the mars than the life is likely to be that of a ‘lassode ki gitak [useless]. That would be in line with the 41 and 42 editions for what they say for mercury and the sun in the 9th house; and also in line with what the three editions say for mercury in the 9th house. But if the mercury in the 9th house is not with either the sun or the mars, and instead gets only associated in some other way with these planets, like through aspect, then the native’s life may not be like lasoode ki gitak. The mercury in the 9th house will get associated with the Sun and Mars if either of them or both are in the 3rd or the 5th house having an aspect on the 9th house. An aspect is a form of ‘yuti’ [combination]. In a varshphal chart mercury and the sun can be far apart. Therefore the statement of the 1952 edition states a possibility where the Sun is not with the mercury as such, but is instead associated with the mercury in some other form. Thus if the mercury and the sun and/or mars are together in the 9th house the life of the native will be useless [lasoode ki gitak] ; but if the sun and/or mars get associated with the mercury in the 9th house the life of the native may not be like that of lasoode ki gitak. In Jyotish there are some universally accepted terms; the word kendra house will always mean the 'band mutthi ke ghar'; the 1, 5, 9 th houses are known as trikona houses; 6,8,12 the trik houses; 3,6,10,11 the upachya houses; 3,6,9,12 the apoklim houses.
