It is not in any derogatory sense, instead it is a compliment given to a dog. A dog doesn't digest any thing which isn't palatable to him, even if it be some thing so liked by every one else. A dog is a dervish. And a dervish is one who fears nobody, not even a king. A dervish says what he thinks is right and says it so loudly. Therefore if some thing is unpalatable, the dervish doesn't digest it.
