Guest guest
To Paola: The basic Vedic house system is the sign-as-house system, but many (most?) Vedic astrologers combine it with one of two other systems: (1) Sripati, which equally trisects the degrees between the Midheaven (MC) and the Ascendant. The division points are the MIDDLE of each house. (2) The second commonly used system is called " Indian equal house. " This is an equal division from the ascendant degree. Each house is 30 degrees, measured 15 degrees on either side of the ascendant degree and 15 degrees on either side of the same degree in the other 11 signs. These two types of house systems (sign-as-house and one of the other two systems) are used for different purposes. Sign-as-house is used for yogas, but the other systems place the planets in the individual houses. Say a person has 20 degrees of Cancer rising and Venus is in 2 degrees of Cancer. To compute special yogas, Venus is in the first sign. But with the Indian equal house system, the first house starts at 5 degrees of Cancer. So Venus would be experienced as a 12th house planet and would be said to be in the 12th house. I've found that the Indian equal house system seems to be the most accurate for the effects of planets in houses. This use of houses applies to natal charts and is entirely different from the Western sidereal use of the rising, setting and culmination of planets in return charts, which seems to be very accurate for predictive purposes. Mostly the Western sidereal system rejects the traditonal meanings of houses. The entire house question is very much up in the air. I have not made up my mind on how accurate traditional house meanings might be.
