Only under the Greeks was the tropical or seasonal system introduced. the placement of the signs displace at the rate of 1 degree per 72 years against the background of the fixed stars. This is called precession > forms and stars over the millennia, so how are the old ones still accurate > when we look at today's stars?~ some stones, some animals.....all very rich > with grains of truth...when you look at them they do seem to describe you > to some degree, but if you didn't have the label of the date on it and you > just read the descriptions, and picked out the one that most sounded like > you, would it match the one that you were born under according to that > system? In order to keep up with the effects of precession, the tropicalists update their meanings If you look at the descriptions given of the Virgo in today's textbooks and the definition given by the masters of antiquity, you will see the difference. F. Materenus and Manillius give, “mild and lady like”. This is hardly the way that the modern text books describe her. Today’s Virgo is more like what the ancients gave for the Lion. If one were born in antiquity, when the natal sun were conjunct the great fixed star Aldeberan (alpha Taurus) and were fortunate enough to be like Merlin and live into the present, when the Sun returned to the place of birth each year, (the Solar Return) it would be in the sign of Gemini in the tropical zodiac, due to the displacement of precession, and in no way near Alpha Taurus in the night sky. The tropical longitude definition of Aldeberan is in the sign Gemini. However if one were to look at the night sky, the constellation of Taurus is very recognizable, and there in the middle is the great red star, called in ancient times the Bull’s Eye. > What i guess i am asking is how accurate are these systems? Which ones > should we follow? are they just personality guides or can they really tell > you what your days holds? Even given the disadvantages to the tropical system, the best of the professionals can tell a great deal about an individual by reading aspects and using the definitions based on observation. Having said that, I should add that the Sidereal systems, both in the west and in the east are known for giving better results, both in personality delineation and in predictive results. The Hindu astrology of India called Vadic has become popular here in the west. The western Siderealism, Pioneered by Fagan and Allen has fallen on hard times. This is a pity, because its observations and techniques offer the most accurate results. are the astrologers just pulling this out of > their bums? Alas, too many of the people out there today, who call themselves astrologers, do just that, and the paper they print their horoscopes on is worth only for that. The sidereal system never really went away, it was just displaced by something more flashy. The Three Wise men (Magi was the Greek term meaning Astrologer) were using the Sidereal Zodiac when they made the journey to find the child. They followed the star in the east (In the gospel account the term used is te anatoli te, the technical astrology term of the time, to describe the helical phenomenon.) They were using what might be called Location and Timing techniques. T or are the astrologers just pulling this out of > their bums?who are really interested in what the stars say, should seriously and objectively investigate the Sidereal systems, both east and west.
