Ive been a longtime Matrix Software User, since 1981 (?) back in the Commodore

64 days.

The WinStar 2.0 is what I use, it is database driven so it matches right up to

Astrodatabank, the files are the same format '.mdb' .This is useful when

compiling alot of charts. The 200 different chart styles/formats is unsurpassed,

single wheels, bi-wheels, tri-wheels, quads.

It does lack in technique in that you cant do a PSSR or SQ with parans hit list,

but it will do everything else.

The Winstar maps module is still off on risings and settings, something was lost

in translation from DOS to Windows here because the users of AstroMaps Hi-Res

(Jim Lewis authored), a dos version astrocartography program is still accurate

and runs beyond the y2k limits that were put on QuickCharts.

Some advantages are its ease to run charts, in seconds, easy to find modules and

use, just the variety of it.

There are some freeware programs still available, Canopus 2.0 download which was

posted to this list a while back,

http://www.clairvision.org/CKB/CKBC/CKBC_000_222/QID_0000_222_014.html

it has a report writer, you may find it useful, does Fagan-Allen sidereal

charts.

Astrolog 5.40 is at the site, I'm using a 5.41G version that takes HMS in time

and LON/LAT. Abramov made some more changes. You can now show aspects by orb (at

last!) and it shows declinations for house cusps.

http://www.astrolog.org/astrolog.htm

The swiss ephemeris is included, the SVP is Fagan-Allen, however the people at

Astrodienst with their free chart generator continue to call Fagan-Allen SVP -

Hindu Sidereal.

Astrolog is still the only program that I have seen that you can create a list

of fixed stars and run parans list in clock time, prime vertical mundoscope in

360 notation positions and animation in real time. (what the hell is he talking

about?)

Astrowin freeware, interesting program, has modules for calculating Astrodynes

(cosmodynes) and sidereal option is Fagan-Allen SVP.

i believe janus is based in new zealand...i have

winstar, solar fire, winastro, and janus...all latest

versions...prefer janus because it has an solar &

lunar KINETIC option,.does planetary parans, beautiful

graphics for atlas maps...solar fire has a nicer

'wheel' collection. hallorans winastro only practical

use for me is its 'noviens' feature. i have yet to

realize winstar's potential as i find it somewhat

complicated to use.

I've used it since it came out in the eighties in dos, and have the

latest version in Windows. It seems accurate to me, and when I check it

against sidereal charts I know are accurate. I bless computer software,

and try to use the best I can of it, as mathematics is not my strong

point, used to struggle to do them by hand years ago and never got down

logarithms and how to use them. I am however pretty techy on a computer

and can run almost any program, did even learn to program a little in

dbase, and can put a computer together and take it apart----upgrade

etc...so stick to my computer program to crunch my numbers and cross my

fingers it is accurate.

Winstar 2 can be set to the sidereal parameters etc. so use it. Have

tried some others downloaded and shareware and they seemed good, but am

used to Winstar2.

Am open to trying other programs and even downloaded the one mentioned

the other day out of curiosity. I have a rather large hard drive,

actually two full computer setups on one monitor and keyboard I can

switch back and forth on as do digital videography and editing, so if

any one wants me to try out a program for ease of use, I can, but don't

expect mathematical evaluation of it.

I like Winstar2, what was that again about its maps, they are off???

I downloaded the Demo version of Janus and haven't enjoyed using it

very much. Do you know if the demo version is the same as the version

that you are using? The problem I'm having is being able to utilize

Sidereal for every chart I want to cast. The horary/election charts

can only be done it seems in a tropical format. The only " real-time "

chart can be cast in the quad-wheel format... I do like the ease of

viewing the 9th harmonics. Maybe I just need to work with it a bit

more. I understand that you prefer it but it isn't acting sidereal

friendly to me. Any tips on its use would be appreciated...

Hi John:

Yes it is annoying that Janus Hoary option isn't wired

for the sidereal zodiac. I sent them an email

suggesting that they sidereally update it in their

next upgrade; you could also email them with the same

request if your iterested in the program....not sure

if their shareware download is the latest version. I

like the extra sidereal features including the solar

and lunar kinetic (only program that does), planetary

parans, and the interpretation mode is easy to edit

for sidereal preferences. don't use hoary much anyway

but otherwise it is sidereally friendly for solunars,

etc.

Yo Miguel,

According to Janus their trial software is & #34;fully

functional & #34;. The information supplied with the

software refers to it as the & #34;full & #34; Janus

program.

I presume that their trial software is what they sell

commercially.

Since I have an old copy of NOVA I'm able to calculate

kinetic returns. Fact is, NOVA in my opinion, is one

of the most friendly sidereal programs ever written.

If it could do mundoscopes and a paran list it would

be complete.

I'll work with the Janus program some more and send

the authors some suggestions... Thats the only way

they know what their potential customers want.

I'm not crazy about their font for aspects.. my eyes

must be getting weak or something... but for me its

like something you would have seen 20 years ago or

more on a computer.

Juan...Janus also has a nice rectification

option..easy to edit (single wheel) and progress or

regress for any time. parans are measured in R.A.,

S.T., and Local Time.

Cheers, Mike
